What problem does your idea solve?

Early diagnosis and intervention is critical to getting children with mental disabilities prepared to lead a healthy, productive life as adults. In Uganda, basic health care is scarce, and local Village Health Teams (VHTs) are overburdened. This idea endeavors to provide local VHTs with remote access to experts in mental disability early diagnosis and intervention.

Explain your idea

A digital platform for linking global experts in childhood mental disability diagnosis and intervention with local Village Health Teams. (UX Design in development.)

Who benefits?

Children in rural Ugandan communities who are suspected of having a mental disability are the primary beneficiaries of this idea. Village Health Teams will benefit from receiving remote access to expertise and training, which makes this idea self-sustaining, rather than indefinitely dependent on external resources.

How is your idea unique?

It aims to be self-sustaining through training rather than indefinitely dependent on external resources.

Tell us more about you

I am one-half of a husband and wife team wit interest and some experience in this domain. My wife has designed and initiated clinical trials with Village Health Teams in Uganda for the dissemination of women's health education. I'm a design methods geek who works in global marketing.

What are some of your unanswered questions about the idea?

Digital infrastructure in Uganda represents a challenge, as does the VHT program. While VHTs are recognized by the government of Uganda as a valuable resource, incentives to work as a VHT are minimal.

Hey Joe,
We are working on diagnosis and screening using mobile in Uganda, mostly focused on cognitive/developmental disability. Sounds like some interesting overlap with your idea. I'd love to learn more about your work.
