To visualize a universally relevant truth - The tools that connect us are the same tools used to observe us.
Sketch 1 (1,500 characters)
NOTE: I sketch my drafts in photoshop in a semi-polished fashion to convey the concept more clearly.
We all (majority of us) use technology on a daily basis, this is certain in the modern era. The problem with constant connection is that it serves as a beacon for those who are searching for you, ethically or not.
Cyberhackers are opportunists that take full advantage of permanent connectivity and digital transaction. As difficult as it is to believe, we are still at the foundation phase of digital progression. Soon there will be no need for paper and everything will take place in virtual space - Connectivity will no longer be a luxury that we abuse, it will become a way of living and transacting. However, as young as this movement actually is, Exploitative measures have already been exhibited as possible and highly problematic.
If this is the beginning of what is to come then we need to act as though it affects each and every one of us, which it does. It starts with awareness because most people have no idea and hackers know people have no idea - If people are exposed to a powerful visual that alerts them to the danger that we might already be experiencing.
Using the visual of a Digital/Cybernetic eye, I wish to show how an anonymous spectator is viewing your banking transactions or financial management - Arguably the most private/confidential facet of your professional life.
Sketch 2 (1,500 characters)
Using the visual of a Digital/Cybernetic eye, I wish to show how an anonymous spectator has intercepted a Skype call/ Facetime (private/intimate) for perverted gains.
What have you learned through this sketching process? (1,000 characters)
I have learnt how clueless society is abut hacking. It is misconstrued tirelessly by Hollywood and pop-culture. The truth is that it is the most stealthy crime on earth and it is why we have little understanding about it - It barely exists to most.
The fastest way to create awareness is to show people how it affects them - in a seemingly obvious way. Abstracting the idea and creating an abstract image to accompany it will never work, it will only further complicate the topic.
I have learnt that there is many ideas that spring to mind for a relatively untapped industry, such as cybersecurity, and methods to represent it from the left-field way of thinking.
Tell us more about you. (1,000 characters)
My name is Ray, I am a proudly South African creator that has/will always had/have a passion for visuals (eye candy).
I believe that an image that is powerful enough can engage change through shifting peoples perspectives. If you show them a representation of something in a way that they never thought of, they may never think of the subject in the same light ever again. I believe that concept is the best way for sharing ideas because we are visual learners and images stick with us far longer than words. It's extremely difficult to share an idea directly from your head, if you can draft a visual then less of your idea is up to interpretation from the other party. Concept images get everyone on the same page quicker.
Why are you participating in this Challenge? (750 characters)
I find it scary how technophobic and oblivious society really is, The power of hacking exploits our disillusion and I want to change that.
I work, especially often, with technology and I believe that the relationship between man and machine should progress the human race and not hinder it. It's shocking how the tool that can catapult us into the future may very easily become a tool of regression. Most of all, I believe that our privacy is the one thing that should be forever upheld and breach-free.
Coming Soon ;)
