Highlighting the risk of an unsecured connected life.
Sketch 1 (1,500 characters)
Focusing on the Internet of Things, I chose to visualize what can happen when consumers adopt a connected lifestyle without awareness of the risks involved or how to protect themselves. Smart home devices offer the benefit of simplifying your life by collecting data from your behavior and integrating your personal information. However, the other side of the coin is what users too often discover the hard way - that the ease of having your data in one accessible place (e.g. via your a single sign-in or unsecured wifi network) also makes it vulnerable to hacking. The basic concept is to show in universal terms that a single easy-to-guess password, which is all too common amongst the less tech-savvy, is like an open invitation to hackers.
Sketch 2 (1,500 characters)
Building off the same concept, this version can show the vulnerabilities of an easy-to-guess password in a more real-life setting.
Once I am able to refine the design, I might consider a combination of these visuals showing smart devices inside the house, and/or perhaps even just simplifying the key graphic as its own visual.
What have you learned through this sketching process? (1,000 characters)
In spite of my base knowledge on these topics, I feel confident that they can be communicated in fairly simple ways to the general public. Limited understanding may even be an advantage if trying to simplify complicated ideas.
Tell us more about you. (1,000 characters)
I am a visual designer with a particular interest in storytelling and communicating complex concepts in ways that are easy to understand. I think any topic can be compelling and understandable if you tell the right story.
Why are you participating in this Challenge? (750 characters)
As a designer I understand the frustration with the lack of stock graphics that don't verge on cliche. The topic of cyber security is an important one as well that can really benefit from this challenge, as the public needs to be more engaged and aware of what they can do to protect themselves.
What is your experience with the field of cybersecurity?
I have minimal experience and/or knowledge in the cybersecurity field.
What best describes you?
I’m a professional visual creator affiliated with an organization.
