Cyber Essentials is a simple but effective scheme created by the NCSC and backed by the UK government. The aim is to help protect organisations, regardless of size, against a whole range of the most common cyber attacks. The Cyber Security firm I work for is a certification body for the Cyber Essentials scheme and we assist organisations both in the UK and internationally in achieving the certification. The scheme is based around 5 main security controls, including firewalls, passwords, patch management for example. The scheme is a hugely accessible and cost effective method of ensuring you are protecting your organisation from a large number of cyber attacks. Unfortunately from experience, a lot of smaller companies find implementing or even fully understanding these technical controls hugely difficult. The company I work for is based in the south west of England, and is dedicated to assist businesses of all shapes and sizes in our region with their information security seriously, protecting themselves with these essentials as a minimum These are some ideas of how to illustrate, the need for strong passwords and the importance of firewalls. I would like to develop these illustrations to be more effective, also including the other controls required for the scheme.

Tell us more about you. (1,000 characters)

I grew up in a rural village in the north east of England, I went to university to study Fine Art, I've had various office jobs. I am pretty much your everyday, incredibly average, non-technical young professional. That was until 15 months ago, when I unexpectedly found myself working as an account manager at a cyber security consultancy. Now I spend most days talking to clients about their experiences and issues, advising on how they can improve their data and information security. I am constantly shocked and saddened when hearing clients stories about their experiences with the cyber world, how it's affected their businesses in terms of reputation and finances, even more so when a lot of issues might never have happened with simple preventative actions.

Why are you participating in this Challenge? (750 characters)

I work as an Account Manager at a Cyber Security consultancy, but outside of my nine to five job i take on freelance illustration work. As i work in Cyber Security and also illustration, i thought the challenge would be an interesting opportunity to take part in. It has already pushed me outside my comfort zone, as my normal illustrative style lends itself to children book illustration, which i am currently working on both illustrations for a clients book and one i have written myself.
