What if we created more opportunities for kids to showcase their work within established cultural institutions?

Over the summer, I saw a group of kids perform an experimental piece onstage with Carnegie Hall musicians. They were thrilled to be performing in front of an audience and eager to explain what they were doing and teach members of the audience how to participate.

So often our culture tells kids that their ideas and creations aren’t as good as adult work. They are seen as being a product of play and aren’t taken seriously. In musuems, kids’ work lives in the education room, not in the gallery. Why don’t we try to change this paradigm and let kids know that their accomplishments have cultural value?

Let’s work with galleries, orchestras, libraries, and other cultural organizations to let kids take over some of their programming on a regular basis.

Hi Erica,
I like your idea. How about having openings as well for their museum shows or use kids art to hang on corporations walls to bring laughter an joy while passing it in the hallways. Our corps walls are blank.
