Creativity Virus - Bugs For the Young & Young at Heart

An infectious movement designed to bring back the creative side of those who have lost "touch" with their inner child, through different programs, spaces and mediums. To spark creativity and leave the fear of failure and insecurities behind.

We've all been to Uncle Ted's house. A middle-aged, average type of guy with a modest and conservative lifestyle, who has spent the last 20+ years in the workforce. As part of his daily routine, he sits at his living room couch behind a stack of paperwork, makes phone calls to clients and goes out to the hardware store. You stumble upon a box that says "memorabilia", and inside you find pictures and artifacts of Ted of when he was younger. A photo of when he used to build puppets out of milk cartons with his dad, a small dictionary of an invented new language written with his sister Pam, and score boards when he used to host throwing competitions of cereal box playing cards on the kitchen table with his friends and neighbors. You wonder.. where did this person go? It's hard to believe that this once fun and creative kid became such a boring and monotonous creature. Then you think, wouldn't there be a way to bring back his inner child? A way to help him reclaim his long forgotten creativity? 

Maybe then he could help generate out-of-the-box ideas which would increase productivity at work, help turn everyday habits into something fun and exciting, and help him create and develop events together with members of his own community, making his weekends brighter, more fulfilling and happier person overall.  

The Solution

The Creativity Virus Movement is a contagious flu-like movement that spreads quickly and would be composed of a series of programs or bugs, in which kids from local communities would design and develop, then implement together with the young and young-at-heart adults like Uncle Ted. The goal is to work together to inspire and apply those creative skills into their daily lives. The movement would cause a positive impact in both the younger and older generations alike, while empowering the youth and cultivating their creative confidence.  




 

In this challenge, we want to create ideas with young people, not for them. Outline how you’re planning to involve young people or other end-users (parents, teachers, etc) in designing, iterating or testing your idea during the Ideas phase.

The Bugs. ☺ A Kid-run series of TedTalks, Youtube, and Social Media Events. Kids would host and conduct social media events such as viral videos, tweets and Facebook posts to share their inspiring accomplishments in which they applied their creative skills. Exe. A science project that turned into a successful business, or how a local cause impacted millions of people worldwide. ☺ School Programs. Teachers would work together with their students on how to make the learning experience more fun, compelling and engaging. It would all start with a starter or co-creation kit, that would lead to incorporate creativity into class activities, after-school programs and homework assignments. Exe. Substitute heavy books with online copies, design a "funny class clock" to keep track of time, host student-led activities and special projects within the classroom and develop core solutions for their particular school such as a recycling centre, a newly invented after school sport, or a campaign to integrate disabled and/or bullied students. ☺ Weekend Community Engagement. Have neighborhood kids create and implement activities for the entire community. Exe. An art installation in which everyone can co-create and help build, a park sculpture made of reused goods, a food drive, a giant picnic, a pumpkin race competition. ☺Lunch and Play at the Workplace. Inspired by the lunch and learn sessions hosted at the workplace, kids could come at a scheduled time to propose creative solutions for the particular office, firm or field of work in order to increase productivity, decrease stress,and substitute convention with innovation. Exe. Have show-and-tell sessions to replace boring meetings, using fun apps to communicate with each other,have a monthly yoga session, use colour spreadsheets. ☺Turning Daily Tasks and Habits into Fun-time. When doing chores or habits around the house, they can sometimes be monotonous and boring. Kids can spend time with their parents in turning the daily routine into something fun and constantly evolving. Exe. Washing teeth with the alternate hand, making monster creatures out of dinner, creating a hobby, keeping scoreboards of how many trash bags each member of the family takes out and giving a reward for the winner.

How might you envision your idea spreading across geographies or cultures so that it inspires young people around the world to cultivate their creative confidence?

The nature of the creativity virus is if for it to spread as far and wide as it can go, using means such as technology, the community, internet, apps, social media, the possibilities are endless. The bugs can inspire other bugs and creative activities, then applied and adapted to different countries, communities and cultures worldwide. Depending on the needs of each individual and setting, creativity driven activities inspired and run by children can be used to help find solutions within the realms of poverty, lack of education, sanitation, and so on.

What skills, input or guidance would you like to receive from the OpenIDEO community to help you build out or refine your idea further?

Design a webpage that can serve as a ignition platform and an app, design starter and co-creation kits for students, parents, teachers and communities. Develop mechanisms so kids can directly connect with stakeholders that would allow them to plan and host both viral and local events more frequently and extensively to create a greater impact.

Really like the word ''Creativity Virus''.
Good idea though with lots of possibilities.
Would be nice to see an idea as how would you initially make people motivate to be part of your program or website to turn into a bigger community thing.
