Virtual Cafeteria

Kids need unstructured social time to maintain their mental health, so let's create a virtual cafeteria for those organic conversations.

Tell us about your idea

When I asked my 10 year old daughter what she missed most about her school, she answered without hesitation, "Lunch, definitely." She loved sitting with different groups of friends each day and catching up on things in their lives. The conversations had natural lulls, and the time recharged her for the rest of the afternoon.

How might we reimagine this unstructured social time while students are learning remotely? Can we recreate the cafeteria and allow for group and 1:1 conversations that students can move in and out of? One inspiration is this site https://theonline.town/

What part(s) of the pre-COVID school system do you wish to leave in the past? Why?

We should leave very-structured time for children in the past. Students need more unstructured play time to foster their creativity.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to share this idea.

I've worked in education for the last 12 years. I also am the parent to a 10 year old. I was inspired to share this idea because I see how lonely my child has become since shelter-in-place started.

What region are you located in?

  • North America

Where are you located?

Based in Bayview-Hunters Point, San Francisco

Hi Tess !
That's great insight ! I think we need a place where we can gather in the same mind as a cafe in a virtual space. Perhaps students may be satisfied if they order coffee in this virtual space and have it delivered to their home!
