Tell us about your idea

In a classroom teacher can monitor students, but in this new virtual class mode it becomes increasingly difficult for teachers to monitor students AND teach at the same time. Most students, including myself, get bored during class, and stop paying attention. I want to tackle this issue. How? With the help of Unboredify, an application that can be added as a widget to any virtual learning platform for children from pre-K to class 12. Unboredify uses eye-tracking and facial recognition software to detect whether a student is paying attention. When a student is not paying attention, Unboredify notifies the teacher that the student is not paying attention. BUT, Unboredify doesn't just stop at that! In order to bring the child's attention back to the class, Unboredify sends a short, interesting, topic-related game that pops up on the screen of the student. It grabs the attention of the student, makes them pay attention again, complete a fun task that earns them points that add up over time, and that they can use to trade or compete with their fellow students. All the teacher needs to do is tell Unboredify what topic they will be teaching in that session, and Unboredify does the rest. It searches its game repository and gives the students gamified tasks that are topic related and of that class/learning level.

What part(s) of the pre-COVID school system do you wish to leave in the past? Why?

I want the conventionality in education to go away, like rote learning. I want schools to push children to research and find the latest essays and topics related to the topics they are doing. I want schools to start finding fun ways of education and give us students more time to follow our passions in schools, finding lesser work and more of fun while learning a lot. While we do have a lot of project-based learning, it is too structured and I want more freedom to explore the topics and research them as I want. I also want that schools don't have too many standardized tests and don't assess using only marks but also teach how to be human!

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to share this idea.

I am a grade 8 student studying in The Shriram Millenium School, in India. I was inspired to share this idea because this is not only my problem, it is the problem of students all around the world. Hence it made me feel that sharing this idea is important.

What region are you located in?

  • Southern Asia

Where are you located?

I live in New Delhi which is the capital of India. The colony that I am staying in is Sarita Vihar which is located quite close to the river Yamuna in the south-eastern part of the city. Delhi is an ancient city that has been inhabited for nearly 2,000 years of recorded history and its current topography and demographics reflect that. Sarita Vihar is a microcosm of Delhi's heritage - within a 8 kilometer radius of the colony are located the tombs of Humayun - a great Mughal king and father of Akbar one of the greatest kings of India and Nizamuddin Auliya the most famous saint of the chisti sufi order and a great philosopher. In another direction lies Tughlakhabad the capital city of the Tuglaghs one of the dynasties that ruled from Delhi before the Mughals. Today Sarita Vihar is one of the greenest colonies of Delhi with well laid out parks and broad roads and within its election constituency lies a bird sanctuary, a few villages - Jasola & Khadar (where the pace of life seems uncity like), New Friends colony, Okhla an industrial estate and a workmen's colony. One can say this area is truly a microcosm of Indian history and current demography.

A very promising idea Abhay!
I especially like your underlying premise that kids tend to reach a point of boredom in their studies not so much due to a lack of interest in learning about the topic, but because the way it is being presented to them is no longer interesting and engaging enough.
Excited to see you take this forward, good luck!

It's an original idea Abhay. And very much within the realms of possibility today. I am particularly impressed that you have taken a personal experience and identified a universal need gap from that. It is a big idea, I hope you take it to the next stage and build a prototype. All the best!

It's a great idea Abhay. While facial recognition technology has been around for sometime...linking it to student engagement and specially bringing the gaming angle to increase engagement is a great solution.do explorethe idea further and build some prototype for the same. All the best.
