The End of Standardized Testing

My contribution is to reimagine how we go about examining students' intelligence and character without the pressures of standardized testing

Tell us about your idea

My idea is to permanently get rid of any standardized testing such as STAAR, SAT, ACT, etc. A future in schooling without the stresses of standardized testing would be a remarkable turn around for students and teachers. My mom is a 5th grade teacher and the STAAR test not only stresses her out for having to accurately prepare and proctor the exam, but also her students as they will be required to take remedial classes if they don't score well. It is ludicrous to base so much of a student on how well they perform on a test. The tests don't even accurately measure one's intelligence as they claim to. I took part in an SAT prep class and learned nothing but how to beat the exam at its own game. They give you tips on how to correctly guess and work around the difficulties of the exam. This proves that the exams are a measure of test-taking abilities rather than a student's intelligence and character.

What part(s) of the pre-COVID school system do you wish to leave in the past? Why?

As I already described, I wish to leave standardized testing in the past. The tests were so easily wiped out for this year's students, so there is no reason why it couldn't be permanent. The tests base student's intelligence on their test-taking abilities and I believe they cause too much stress to compensate for the good they could do.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to share this idea.

I am a senior at Round Rock High School and was assigned this by my business teacher to get motivated to create our own future school prototype post COVID.

Hi Katelyn--Thank you so much for sharing. I agree the standardized test is really is out of control. You don't learn anything from being taught to the test. The thing at the state level like STARR, CSAP, etc... is funding is tied to it by the federal government, its all part of the No Child Left Behind education legislation. How do you think that these laws can be changed to get rid of this test burden? The ACT, SAT, AP, etc... are just money making scams that are recognized by colleges and universities for admittance. Should this institutions stop excepting these "services" for entry in school? Some schools are starting to do this? Hope you didn't have to take the STARR this year and you liked your business class. Best--K
