Tell us about your idea

Kids Time Home is helping families with young children to engage, interact and learn from each other through a combination of LIVE shows, access to content and social media community during COVID-19 in the world's 7th largest city with over 2.5 million children between 3-8 years old.

What part(s) of the pre-COVID school system do you wish to leave in the past? Why?

I believe, for a child to learn and prepare them for the future, our schools and our families should focus more on skills like creativity, problem-solving, empathy, emotional intelligence and moral values. I wish to leave the part where schools are just a place for rote learning and memorizing, and parents treat the schools as a place that simply takes exams and grades. A greater discussion should start where schools and families work together to prepare their children for the future. There is always a visible tension between school teachers, management and parents in our country. In post-COVID, I would love to see that change.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to share this idea.

I am Waliullah Bhuiyan. I am a children's book author and designer. I am also running an organization called Light of Hope - a social enterprise focusing on helping children to develop their creativity, problem-solving, emotional intelligence. In the last 5 years, I have turned the organization to become the largest education-based social enterprise that is directly impacting over 150,000+ children.

When COVID-19 outbroke in our country, we have to close 8 of our after-school centers where we run courses for 500+ children on creativity, problem-solving, empathy and social skills. So we decided to start Kids Time Home - a family program that will help children and parents to continue spending quality time and learning the skills. But since the whole country is in lockdown and all the schools are closed, we made the program open for everyone.

What region are you located in?

  • South-eastern Asia

Where are you located?

We are located in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh and the center of the COVID-19 of the country. It is the 7th largest city by population in the world. 2.5 million children (3-8 years old) are stuck at home for the last 2 months due to school closure and strict restriction of going out. Schools are not taking online classes, and there is almost no engagement for children beyond spending time with parents and smartphone or TV.

One of the innovative ideas to continue creative activities from home. Specially in Bangladesh where people prioritize academic learning too much, kids time home will help reduce some stress from the children.

Thanks Momel. Yes, it will be great to see how this is going to shape in the coming days.

This is INCREDIBLE, innovative work, Waliullah Bhuiyan ! I'm Rachel, one of the Community Coaches, and I am truly moved by Light of Hope's efforts to keep Dhaka's children (and families) engaged in meaningful learning. I'm curious, are school teachers involved in any of the programming/support?

I was particularly moved by your comment, "a greater discussion should start where schools and families work together to prepare their children for the future" and wonder how this Kids Time Home experience might serve as a solid entry-point to more meaningful dialogue between these groups. The possibilities give me great hope!

Thanks for the kind words. At this moment, we are not involving. In the second phase, we are engaging teachers and experts to start taking online courses. For example, Sesame street puppeteer will be taking puppet course, school art teacher can take art class online. This will also help them to earn since most of the teacher salaries are due for school lockdown.
We already hosts a session with parents and children after season 1 to learn more about improving the concept of more meaningful dialogues. We are really excited to see how things will be moving in the future. Thanks to IDEO for initiating the challenge. We hope to learn more from the community and you guys.
