Get to know the initiative!  \o/

"¡Oye Profe! Laboratorio Colaborativo de Educación" idea was born during the current crisis context in Perú. It is a website whose goal is to ensure the wellbeing of the teachers through mutual collaboration and creation of a professional learning community. The goal of this community is to conect teachers to (1) share teaching strategies/resources and (2) create together innovative solutions to the current challenges.

What have been going on? :)

 Learning from people! So far 10 peruvian teachers have being interview on: teaching experiences from home, technology use and access, interaction with others teachers, and emotions and relationships. This helps to know more about what they want  and need in a platform like this. 

Building community! to start with the initiative, a facebook group was created  for teachers where they can share share: doubts about paperwork and courses, teaching experiences, solutions they applied and worked, feelings, and relationship with their students´ parents.  They can collaborate with each other by (1) posting videos that can be useful for colleagues (2) posting own/online resources. (3) giving mini workshops for the other teachers. 

So... how the platform will be? D:

The Interviews and facebook group have given a first approach to what teachers need and desire! This is how the platform is imagined: 

  • iTeach: teachers have a personal profile where they can describe the courses they teach, personal interests, if open to project collaboration, etc. 

  • Teacher to teachers:  teachers can interact through text or videocalls. For text interaction they form groups, they can choose if is private or public and has filters by educational level, course, etc so anyone can join and don´t get lost. For the videocalls there are 3 types that can work to incentivized the bonds and network of teachers.

    a) In the first type, the teachers are the speakers of workshops or webinars, they could share their experience and knowledge about certain topics or resources and have a discussion between the participants. That way they could learn from each other in a more horizontal way.

    b) In the second type of videocalls, the speakers are specialist from a different area. For example: a phycologist can help the teachers on how to manage the stress or their student´s parents; a designer can facilitate a workshop about design thinking for tecahers.

    c) In the third one, videocall is a safe space for teachers to just talk about whatever they want and topics that some of them have in common. For example, teachers that are also parents and want to share how they are balancing family and work, or an space just for young teachers that are giving classes for the first time.

  • Collective library: teachers upload teaching resources made and used by them and resources found on the internet. 

  • Reach the Teach: teachers can ask about some topic and other colleagues can answer it byt text  or they can coordinate a videocall. Also if they have a project or idea they can connect with potential partners. 

Events and parterships! \o/

These months there has been "COVID19 design challenges" and "hackatons" to improve a find solutions for different areas in crisis, one of them has been education. Most of this iniatives are directed for students and people from different academic backgrounds but thre hasn´t been one for teachers or at least one that involves them. And they are a central part of the education system. That is why the project propones events for teachers where they can build projects and also interact more with colleages, find partners with different abbilities and create solutions for the struggles they face while teaching from home and why not for the education system itself.

It would be important to make alliances with schools, teachers organizations and even government education institutions. It would help a lot to count with their support to provide financial support for teachers projects, or to contact specialists that could be invited for the videocalls.

Making it global! :)

It would amazing to make <<¡Oye Profe!>> global, there are so many similarites but also differences with other countries´ education systems that all the teachers could benefit from global collaboration. They could learn from each other, and build innovative projects that has no barriers. It would be a good idea to start with small pilots in other countries to see how they work and how to connect them. The IDEO challenge has shown that there are a lot of people who wants to improve education for students, teachers, parents, and communities. 

Always changing! :D

The different realities of teachers along the country and the visible inequality impulse this initiative to be in constant change to try to meet their necessities. This platform seeks to ensure teacher´s wellbeing but also close the knowledge bridges between them.

What part(s) of the pre-COVID school system do you wish to leave in the past? Why?

The belief that "Human Capital", that is, the teaching experience, knowledge, and pedagogical skills of teachers, are determinants for the educational model. Although it is an important factor in the teacher´s development, it is necessary to take into account the factor of "Social Capital", that is the relationships that are created between teachers. According to researchers, the importance of this is that teachers can continuously learn from each other's conversations and improve in what they do. Social capital is not an individual characteristic of the teacher but resides in the relationships between teachers. So it is not only important what a teacher knows (human capital) but also from whom he gets that knowledge. If you have a problem with a student, ¿where does the teacher go for information and advice? ¿To whom do you express your own ideas or assumptions about teaching? ¿Who do you tell about gaps in your understanding of your teaching subject?

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to share this idea.

A while ago, I worked on a digital transformation project for the Ministry of Education of my country. Part of my job was to observe and interview school principals / teachers from different cities. During interviews, they commented that although they have coordination meetings at school, they needed spaces to share their teaching experiences, exchange strategies and create collective solutions.This is something I always remember, and during quarantine, I wondered what happened to these few physical spaces where teachers could talk?. So weeks ago I started to interview teachers to learn about their needs and teaching experiences during quarantine. These are very diverse and make visible the inequality that exists in the country. I think it is important to build bridges between them, share knowledge, foster collaboration and give the space for emotional support that contributes to their wellbeing.

Where are you located?

Lima´s sky is called "donkey´s belly" because is always gray, no matter the season, especially on winter the sky is the grayest. It is also called "the city of opportunities" because being the capital, and Perú being a centralized country, most of the ways to have a better education, or jobs are here. That is why I believe it is important to descentralized the knowledge and internet through virtual spaces is giving us that opportunity.
