Help teachers train machines with concepts you don't need teachers for, instead spend time discovering and applying from the concept learnt.

Tell us about your idea

Teachers spend a lot of hours preparing and teaching the same concepts every year to new students. What if we can make the teaching experience better for the teachers and learning experience better for the students? Teachers will teach concepts to machines, closely to how they teach a new cohort of students. This needs to be done only once, as concepts remain constant for the most part. Once we have "gold medal" machines, they can teach concepts to students. So when teachers and students meet in the classroom, they focus on how to apply the concept instead of trying to learn the concept. This has been in the works with the focus on students with a program using ALEKS and a school in Vietnam, but there has been very little focus on how we can train and help millions of our teachers to help our students benefit from this approach. The focus of the idea is educators to train and teach the machines just as they would a regular student. The machines would learn the concepts by sitting/watching (the same way a student does) in the teacher's classroom for some time, and taking all the necessary exams and attaining all the necessary grades so that the teacher feels comfortable that the machine has learnt all the necessary concepts.This input would feed into a program like ALEKS to be able to create content in a way that is easily understandable to the students. The secondary focus would be on creating curriculum and programs for the teachers themselves on how they need to engage with each student to apply the concepts that they have learnt.

What part(s) of the pre-COVID school system do you wish to leave in the past? Why?

We would like to keep the contact hours between the teachers and students to a minimum and enriching instead of long and boring. Instead of learning concepts for the majority of the time, the students can meet and learn the same concept within a few minutes. At the same time, we do not want an information overload just because kids can learn faster; we can have an adaptive learning approach where the students learn at a pace they are comfortable with and the teachers will focus on more of the application of the concept. The focus of this idea would be to see if it is possible for teachers to be able to train the machines to teach the concepts up to the same level as they themselves would.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to share this idea.

I participated in Complexity Weekend - 2020 where I was made aware of this great divide in access to education between the “haves” and “have-nots”. The more we have this divide, the more the economic inequality will continue to grow. As the economic inequality grows there may be a bigger impact for all of us. I have a 4 year old and want to see if I can leave a better future for him and his friends.
