Tell us about your idea

The graphic attached is one example of ways in which we have tried to keep students engaged beyond course content. Each week we have focused in a virtual challenge include pet pics, recreating childhood photos, etc... But the work we have seen student produce regarding service has been truly impressive and has persisted.

What part(s) of the pre-COVID school system do you wish to leave in the past? Why?

This experience has provided us an opportunity to help students connect real world issues with content and has provided them with opportunities to take action. In theory, this could have (and should have) been happening prior to the COVID outbreak, but it was inconsistent at best. I would love to see education reframed with this sort of relevance and to see the continued push for students to advocate for themselves and others in an effort to problem solve critically and creatively.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to share this idea.

Our school has a motto that underpins all we do: Service, Innovation, Honor, Success. Service truly is a cornerstone of our school community and our students were clamoring for ways to get involved. It has been inspiring to see what they have done.

What region are you located in?

  • North America

Where are you located?

Statesville, North Carolina We are a large, diverse high school in a small, rural town. Our school offers three IB programs and pulls students from a range of 30+ miles. It is a unique context for a high school, especially one focusing on global education, but it makes it a special place. There is a sense of community and family that is not experienced at other schools of similar size.
