Tell us about your idea

EDUton is a design concept inspired by the fitness start-up Peloton. As students return to class next fall, there is a tremendous opportunity to provide each child with a fantastic teacher!

Goal - Increase impact of great teachers and decrease costs of quality/innovation

What part(s) of the pre-COVID school system do you wish to leave in the past? Why?

Let's leave the one teacher one classroom system in the past! Excellent teaching is a skill that can now be scaled up to increase effective teachers' impact. Let's take the most engaging, most talented, most knowledgeable teachers, and more students experience their lessons.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to share this idea.

Passionate about improving educational outcomes for students. I was a teacher and am now supporting middle school and high school students during COVID.

What region are you located in?

Paul Kim great question. I think this idea would work well in large school districts where many students are part of the same school system. For example, Broward County serves 270,000 students. They also have a great understanding of who their top 7th-grade teacher is base on experience and engagement. Instead of having each teacher create their lessons for 7th-grade math, they can allocate all resources into making this one teacher's lesson excellent. A team of teachers can bring all ideas together about the best way to teach one concept based on their scope and sequence and have the experience be executed by one teacher and pump that content into the homes of each student in that grade level. Other teachers will still be given a class cohort. Still, their goals will be to fill in gaps in learning by analyzing exit ticket data and having targeted "office hours" with students who need additional support. There will also be another smaller group that will be opted into higher-level math or lower-level math based on past diagnostics.
- Group of teachers design 1 lesson per day based on ideal scope and sequence- top teacher executes the virtual lesson just like Peloton - exit ticket is given on the platform - teachers are then responsible for monitoring certain groups of students and provide additional supports either later in the day for those groups Big Goal - ensures high-quality initial lesson, decreases inconsistency amongst teachers in virtual setting (some are doing great work, and others are mailing it in as I have seen with my own student), and better allocation of resources.
