A manufacturer of consumer graded cotton swabs from Famalicão - Portugal has significantly adapted his production line to manufacture sample collection swabs which were in high demand due to a shortage in Portugal and a major obstacle to the medical community testing efforts.

The news was first reported on the 8th of Mar. 2020 on the SIC news channel.

The company https://www.hidrofer.com/index.php?lang=pt has, according to another newsagent https://rum.pt/news/empresa-de-famalicao-vai-produzir-300-zaragatoas-por-minuto-e-doa-las-ao-sns invested in the transformation of machinery and slowed his regular cotton swab production in order to keep up with the demand.

Hidrofer is a group of companies ready to respond to the government's appeal to respond to the immediate needs of the country, specifically the frontline medic community, to collect samples for testing for COVID-19, critical to fighting the pandemic. 

According to the website rum.pt Carlos Alberto Silva, manager of the company claims this adaptation in production will come at a cost for the main production line will slow down and the sample collection swabs are to be distributed freely to the NHS.

PLSails https://www.facebook.com/PLSails/ is a Portuguese sail manufacturer from Matozinhos that after realizing the business was going into a recession due to the current crisis immediately shifted his production to answer a critical need, the creation of face shields. Using at hand supplies and surpluses, from the sail's manufacturing, Pires de Lima decided to produce hand made face shields to equip the frontline fighters. Pires de Lima, the company owner, created job offers prioritizing unemployed people to assist in the production of the face shields.
