In many areas of Japan, Nagoya and Aichi Prefecture included, it has been relatively uncommon until now for restaurants to offer takeout options. Recently due to COVID-19 constraints, many businesses have quickly adapted to offer takeout meals and even some cook-at-home kits.
However, there was lack of visibility of these new offerings, especially for small businesses. Since takeout meals have historically been uncommon for many restaurants, it is not always an option that comes to mind for potential customers.
DOUC 同志会 (Association), an association of managers from 20 local SMEs of various industries that normally does various volunteer activities in the community, decided to quickly create a platform for these businesses to promote their takeout offerings and for people to find takeout options. Though other mainstream applications have "takeout" and "delivery" filters for searches, the information is not nearly as comprehensive as the Aichi Takeout Map. This can be seen as a testament to the power of grassroots solidarity and word of mouth marketing.
Since Aichi Takeout Map's release, over 500 businesses have registered and the site is accessed over 10,000 times per day. Business owners can register by filling out an online form, and free resources are available, including standard "Takeout" and "Delivery" signs for businesses to post.
