WonderTree is a technology company that designs augmented reality games, using mirror therapy to facilitate physiotherapy and education of children with special needs. We are a team of clinically trained psychologists and game developers using AR to revolutionize therapeutic care and education for kids. Our games target physical, social, cognitive, language and social development of differently abled children and also contains an in-built reporting system to track the progress of each child. Our target users are children on various spectrum of motor and cognitive disability which include autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, learning disability.

Currently we have over 4000 active users and are deployed in over 5 cities of Pakistan in 12 hospitals and 40+ special schools. We have also deployed our games in schools in Nigeria and are in the process of deployment in UAE as well. Currently, WonderTree is working towards spreading its operations in Middle East, United States, South East Asia and Africa.

Since WonderGames can be deployed anywhere, from clinics and hospitals to households and special and regular schools and it only utilizes a PC/ Laptop with a Camera, there is up to 70% reduction in cost when compared to the conventional methods of rehabilitation, education and development of special children making this technology accessible for the people belonging to all levels of social strata.

Our games are available for anyone to download for free on:

What is the need are you focusing on?

Due to the global pandemic, parents are struggling in seeking therapy and education for their children. There are no remote solutions available to facilitate physiotherapy and development of children with special needs. Our games provide an opportunity for remote learning for children with special needs. They can be downloaded through our website for free.

Our games not only provide an immersive experience for children to promote learning and development, but also contains an in-built reporting system which tracks the progress of each child.

Quality, inclusive education and therapy is expensive and leaves out a large segment of the country's population who cannot afford it.  Wondertree designs games for children with special needs, are accessible and affordable and have successfully improved motor and cognitive skills of over 4000 children with special needs.

Which type of submission are you sharing?

  • Identifying a gap that needs to be addressed
  • Sharing an actual pivot your organization has already made

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

Initially, our business model was business-to-business, as we sold licenses to schools, hospitals and rehabilitation centers where our games were deployed. However, due to the current situation of lock down due to the pandemic, we have shifted our games online where everyone has easy access to them. They can be downloaded easily through our website and we are also offering free download right now owing to the precarious situation worldwide due to COVID-19. Our games target the motor, cognitive and language development of children with special needs, through an engaging and immersive experience of augmented reality. Due to lockdown, many people are forced to stay at their homes, which means they do not have access to therapy for their children. We have made that possible through facilitating physiotherapy and learning remotely through our games.

Do you plan to implement this solution?

Children with special needs are largely neglected in mainstream education, in Pakistan. Based on a report on disabilities by World Health Organization (2011) the prevalence of disabilities in children, in low to middle income countries range from 0.4% to 12.7% . Most of the children with disabilities are unidentified due to lack of diagnostic tools available that are culturally relevant or language specific (WHO, 2011). To promote our solution, we are looking to build partnerships with organizations across the world working on promoting education. This will help us reach greater audiences to promote our games.

What do you think are the main barriers to implementing this solution?

Following are some of the main barriers we are currently facing to implement this solution: 1- Marketing Budget: This is a new service we are providing and we need to market it efficiently so we can reach maximum target audience. The more users we get, the more feedback we will receive which will help us optimize our games accordingly. 2- Compatibility: Our games are currently only compatible with Windows. To make them available for Mac and iOS we would need more resources. 3- International Pricing and Market Research: We plan on selling our B2C games not just in Pakistan but globally. However, we need to decide on a pricing strategy accordingly. This will require more market research. Therefore, we need people with the right expertise

If you are currently working on a pivot, what have you learned so far?

We have learned a lot with this business pivot: • How to work remotely with an organization of 17 people efficiently • Initially, special educators or therapists who were our previous facilitators for the games, who understood the motor and cognitive skills our games focus on. Now that our target customers also include parents, we have realized that they need a lot more guidance, tutorials, and support before they can start using our games with their children effectively. • To increase product awareness in people, we need to invest in digital marketing • All parents have different types of computers (some have computers with a high specification but most of them have low specification computers). We need to optimize our games so that they can run on computers with low specifications as well. • We need to have an online customer support

Are you aware of any open source efforts, hackathons or other collaborative efforts related to your solution? Are you participating in these efforts?

We are a part of and Pakistan Alliance for Mathematics and Science. These organizations have provided us a platform to promote our solution.

Welcome to the challenge Maham Khalid and team. It is is exciting to learn the work that WonderTree is doing with the current situation. Are there any immediate needs that you are looking to meet in terms of scaling your solution at the moment? Are there any priority locations/regions you are looking into? I would also love to know more about the pilot in Nigeria.

Hi! Thank you for taking out the time to read about our solution. Currently we are looking for people to guide us in how we can scale our business in different regions globally. We also need help in deciding a pricing strategy. We require funds for making our games available on iOS and Mac and improving our games for B2C through digital marketing.
We are looking to form partnerships with organizations working on similar solutions around the world, which will help us in scaling our business.
In Nigeria, we have signed an exclusive partnership with an external agency who is facilitating us in deploying our games in the region.
