The use of essential personal protective equipment (PPE) is something that changed radically for some industries, with the aim of restart the economy, governments are publishing national and local guidelines that must be followed by any individual who wants to enter construction places, manufacturing plants or even public spaces that were usually crowded.

The use of face masks and face shields is becoming mandatory for many daily routines where it was not used before. However, the world is facing shortage of these products and this is affecting the main sectors of the economy.

The Full Face Mask becomes and alternative to the use of disposable elements. Provided with a mask, an HEPA filter and a fan, this device will supply the necessary and treated air to each individual. The Full Face Mask will give you a unique experience while you breath.

The concept collects inspiration from Apnea treatment (CPAP machines), Air Handling Units (HVAC) and scuba diving. In addition, this device will manage data from CO2 and temperature sensors.

What is the need are you focusing on?

The Full Face Mask will alleviate the costs related to the disposable and in some cases not fully proven face masks; providing a long-term duration product that can be easily cleaned at home and will guarantee the protection needed for each individual.

The Full Face Mask will be comfortable to wear and most of all, will provide a fresh and clean air for every person who will use it.

Imagine that an employee has to wear face mask every single day of the month, it means 30 disposable units (not contemplating the 8-hours lifetime of the simplest ones, this number can easily double). Let’s say the governments mandate the use of PPE for several industries for minimum period of a year. A person will use at least 360 disposable units in the 12 months. For businesses with more than 50 employees, it means +20,000 disposable units a year.

Under that perspective, it will make more sense not only economically but in term of sustainability to wear The Full Face Mask.

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

The concept idea is to use a CPAP (apnea treatment) full face mask and adapt it to a wearable device located in the hips. Basically this device will work as an air handling unit, with no return, it other words, 100% air renovation. The full face mask will be completely hermetic, which allows us to calculate the rates of air needed by hour to be supplied to the user. In addition to that, it will be possible to use HEPA filtration, that will secure a 99.9% percent of air treatment, something similar as in the surgery rooms. It is known that this solution won't appeal to the everyone, but we are convinced that for many workers in specific industries such us, construction, manufacturing or even contact centers, this project will offer an innovative way to supply air in a comfortable way. The device could be battery powered and the idea is to have low consumption fan ventilators. The filter could be changed in a monthly basis and the device can be easily cleaned and maintained.

It will help the user to not only prevent the COVID-19 but also, protect their body against several viruses that travels in the air, as well as, pollution, pollen and other particles that can be harmful. High production cost related with mask manufacturing and device assembly. Certifications and Governments approvals (Time sensitive).

I love the combination of different devices to create this idea. Are you at all concerned with the bulkiness of this for someone with a job requiring a substantial amount of movement? How much does the assembly weigh?

Hi Jordan Florian , those are really important questions, thanks for asking.
First of all, the original concept is based on the mask and hose used for apnea treatment, I can tell you from a personal experience that a person can sleeps more than 7 hours every night moving in bed without facing difficulties. Of course, there could be some activities that should be evaluated before using the mask, however, I think it will be similar to wear a harness that is currently mandatory for some of these jobs.
In terms of weight, hose and mask (Polycarbonate) are very light, less than 150gr. The device that should be placed at hips-height doesn’t have a final prototype yet, but it won’t be greater than 250gr, which we think it’s pretty manageable. We are still working on that. Glad you like it :)
