T2 stands for Technology to Tutus.  The term "tutu" in Hawaiian language means grandparent.  On a normal day, our organization provides transportation for over 500 low-income seniors from their homes to food programs, grocery stores, and farmers' markets.  With COVID-19 we now bring food and groceries to seniors in an effort to reduce their risk.  What we have during this time that many of them do not have access to technology and if they do...they don't know how to fully utilize the tool.

Because of this, we would like to create a program that provides access to technology.  We would like the technology to include internet access, mobile phones, Alexa Echo Show, ipads, etc.  Once we get seniors access to technology our program will connect technology pros, high school/college students with seniors to provide instruction on how to use their device.

Because of social distancing, the lack of access to the technology of low-income seniors has left many of them disconnected from their families, activities, and the outside world.   Right now we are focusing on getting access to technology...raising funds to purchase and distribute technology and then providing simple training on the tool.

What is the need are you focusing on?

Many low-income seniors we serve are isolated from family, friends, activities, and the outside world.  COVID-19 and the need for social distancing have made this abundantly clear.  Rightly so we have focused most of our technology access efforts on low-income students, however there is a large portion of the senior population that has very little knowledge and experience with technology.

Which type of submission are you sharing?

  • Identifying a gap that needs to be addressed
  • Sharing a pivot idea your organization is considering or could consider

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

The business pivot is providing technology access and training to low-income seniors. High school and college students will train seniors in technology including applications. This program will provide new technology jobs for young adults and pair isolated seniors with company.

  • Yes

Describe the impact that this solution will create in the world.

Low-income seniors will have access to technology. Whether during the COVID-19 stay at home orders or during other times, this program will decrease social isolation of low-income seniors. In the first year, we will also hire 10 -15 young adults as teachers and connect them to seniors.

  • Yes

If Yes to the above, please share 1-2 sentences describing the specific help you desire.

We would like to build a partnership with technology companies and internet providers so we can provide these resources to seniors who can't afford to purchase an Alexa, iPhone etc.

What do you think are the main barriers to implementing this solution?

Right now we are taking this time to develop the program, our main barrier will be in providing access to technology. We will need to purchase or have donated technology such as Alexa Echo Show, iPhones, pads, etc.

If you are currently working on a pivot, what have you learned so far?

It was during our pivot in changing transporting seniors to food programs and groceries to delivering food to seniors that we realized that they lacked access to technology. Because of this lack of technology access, we can not do online shopping, and stay engaged virtually like most others are doing on Facetime, Facebook Live, Zoom etc.

Are you aware of any open source efforts, hackathons or other collaborative efforts related to your solution? Are you participating in these efforts?
