We aspire to bring hope even when it is scarce not only to the diffable community but also our friends, families, and communities around us.

terArtai empowers special-need students to leverage their creativity and generate income by transforming their artwork to various merchandises and sell it though online and offline sales channels. 

What is the need are you focusing on?

Tension 1: Bringing inclusivity and togetherness in times of quarantine
We work closely with a diffable community, those who have down syndrome, cerebral palsy and autism. On a normal day, we work closely with them by making arts which gives them a sense of purpose because they create something sellable. Now, we cannot meet them and our diffable community are feeling even lonelier, and frustrated. We are thinking of ways to help them not lose their sense of purpose by maintaining a sense of inclusivity and togetherness.

Tension 2: Not being able to make an impact in their senior year.
Throughout the quarantine we were contacted by students who were looking for volunteering hours. With social-distancing law, the students can’t do their regular volunteerings.

Tension 3: Hopelessness from people who relies on daily wage.
Together with a few local partners, we want to try to mitigate this issue using the resources that we have.

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

Pivot 1 to remedy Tension 1 & 2 Encouraging people to be creative by creating artworks during the times of quarantine. We started with an a challenge asking our customers to make a painting that captures the beauty of earth, and submit into our instagram. The winners get their painting transformed into scarves. We want to continue with this idea by asking our student volunteers and customers to create sketches with motivational quotes dedicated to our diffable community. -> This brings a potential business stream where people can submit their artworks / parents submitting their kids' artworks, then we turn into merchandise. Pivot 2 to remedy Tension 3: #StrongerTogether campaign by collaborating with a local clothing brand and together we are upcycling deadstock and scrap fabrics into fabric masks. (100% profits is donated to the purchase of food and basic needs for street vendors, and food hawkers (people who heavily rely on daily wage) in Indonesia.

To our diffable community and people we serve: - nurturing creativity even in times of hopelessness. - bringing families closer together, especially within the families of the diffable students as they can colour at home. To our diffable community: - connecting them into the world as they will receive support, motivations from students from other schools, and our customers. - a sense of togetherness. To the volunteers: - bringing excitement and a sense of purpose, although their graduation and senior moments became wobbly, it didn’t stop them from making an impact. To the simple people of Indonesia: - We are able to provide 20 families with daily essentials that can last for about a week.

We are terARTai (pronounced: te-ra-tai) an SME based in Indonesia started in September 2019. We work closely with the special-needs community, especially adults with autism, cerebral palsy, and down syndrome.

Most of our customers are Indonesian Millennial Women who believe in the importance of making an impact through lifting others’ up. In our case, they are lifting the diffable community. terARTai was created to solve the following tensions experienced by adult diffable community: 1.) What is our purpose if we are only a burden?” 2.) “We are lonely, only a few understand and accept us" terARTai slowly gives them purpose. With the help of their teachers and families we ask their point of view of different topics, which we illustrate and transform into scarves or merchandises. Instagram: @terartai

What do you think are the main barriers to implementing this solution?

Barrier 1: Earth Day Challenge participants (some) were excited, yet reluctant to post their artwork as they are not accustomed to showing their work publicly. Some potential participants were reluctant to share their submission through IG post as it also means they will be sharing it publicly. We support the participants by encouraging them and educating that art is an expression of their creative space, as such they should be proud of it. Barrier 2: Increased scarcity and cost of complementary raw material With the objective to maximize the amount of profit we donate, we had to optimize our cost to produce the fabric masks. It took us longer to screen which supplier to work with.

If you are currently working on a pivot, what have you learned so far?

During this time of crisis, it is important to respond, add value, and be agile in order to stay relevant: 1. Build meaningful content to help people during crisis With the implementation of social distancing and active measures taken by the government to encourage people to work from home, people’s activities are also shifting. Staying at home for an extended period of time can be mundane, and therefore to keep people feeling energized, we held various interactive marketing push and held Earth Day Challenge. 2. Conduct corporate responsibility initiatives that matter Although the social distancing measure has been helping to reduce COVID-19 spread, some people are negatively impacted as they are no longer able to generate enough income. Our initiative to upcycle materials received positive feedback, proven by how fast the masks were sold on its 1st day of launch. We announced that all profit will be donated directly to those in need and our followers were excited to support.

Are you aware of any open source efforts, hackathons or other collaborative efforts related to your solution? Are you participating in these efforts?

Yes, we work with Kisah Kasih, an organization focusing on donating and providing daily essentials such as food, drinks, fabric masks, and hand sanitizers. As mentioned above, we donated all profit generated from sales of fabric mask to those in need through this organization.
