We are a women's organization which was producing school jerseys , uniforms and hand-made carpets. Since COVID19 started in Malawi we have adapted to producing cloth face masks, conducting awareness campaigbs through social media and distribution of locally -made soap to those most vulnerable ; women with disabilities.

What is the need are you focusing on?

There is an increased need for hand washing soap as people are required to wash their hands in every public place and often. Poor women may not afford this in their crowded locations, hence the soap distribution. There is a shortage of medical face masks in Malawi which people need to wear to protect from COVID19, therefore to ease the pressure and to leave the available medical masks for frontline staff, we are making cloth face- masks for Ordinary citizens.

Which type of submission are you sharing?

  • Sharing an actual pivot your organization has already made

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

The cloth face masks will ease the pressure and demand for medical face masks to protect societies in Malawi from COVID19. The impact is contributing to reduced spread of the Virus while empowering women with disabilities to earn an income. Distributing locally-made soap from women's groups to other vulnerable populations including the elderly and those with disabilities.

Do you plan to implement this solution?

  • Yes

Describe the impact that this solution will create in the world.

We are targetting reaching 500 women with disabilities and the eldery with cloth face- masks as people in Malawi have rejected a lockdown and are still gathering i crowded markets. Therefore, we will contribute to enhanced protection from COVID19 for these communities. Our commujity of 70 creative women with disabilities under our Project -the Tiwale Creative Women with Disabili will be economically empowered after sewing the masks for a small fee. This is important as now the creative women are receiving less income opportunities due to closure of schools and other companies which are the main customers.
