Emergency Resource Exchange (ERx) is an adaption of Rheaply’s Asset Exchange Manager (AxM) designed specifically for the COVID-19 crisis. It is an online marketplace that allows users to post available supplies or make requests for supplies that are needed. In-app messaging allows users to connect based on what supplies have been posted or requests have been made. The purpose of ERx is to connect supply and demand across organizations in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. The platform seeks to increase visibility of shortages and availability of supplies/equipment, as well as increase efficiency of connecting those people and organizations.

What is the need are you focusing on?

Rheaply is focused on connecting suppliers and organizations in need during the COVID-19 crisis. There has been an incredible number of businesses pivoting their manufacturing to produce hand sanitizers, masks, gloves, etc. In some cases, this PPE is being produced in large quantities without clarity on where these new products should be delivered. Due to the sudden impact on our health care systems, an online marketplace to facilitate transactions, provide clarity on volume needs and create a database of surplus supplies, is a highly valuable solution. There is a lack of resources available highlighting where specific hospitals require more support than others. If supplies can be more quickly, and equally, distributed to those in need, it can help decrease risk significantly for all front-line workers.

Which type of submission are you sharing?

  • Sharing an actual pivot your organization has already made

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

Rheaply’s flagship product is the Asset Exchange Manager. This is focused on increased visibility and utilization of physical assets inside large organizations. With the Emergency Resource Exchange (ERx) platform, this adaptation is focusing on the movement of resources based on supply and demand across the US. Due to the quick design and launch (pro-bono), its functionality is on a strictly transactional level and is less holistic than our standard offering (our goal is to help the community).

Do you plan to implement this solution?

  • Yes

Describe the impact that this solution will create in the world.

The concept of the sharing economy has consumed our way of life since the previous recession. It is no longer a question of ‘should we?’ but rather, ‘why wouldn’t we?’ At times like these, it’s important to gain transparency into where shortages and needs exist: people are always willing to help, but they don’t know where to start. This solution will allow people to not only understand where to place their focus, but also work collectively to be part of the solution. While the application of ERx is local, the ambition is global, such that countries can support each other through manufacturing, supply chain and logistics.

What is the name of your business or organization?

What does your business/company do? Whose needs does your business/company address? Who do you serve?

Rheaply helps large organizations enter the circular economy by increasing asset/resource visibility and utilization through a unique approach: enabling an internal marketplace. Whether assets reside in a warehouse, remote location, or spread out on-site, Rheaply reduces unnecessary double-buying and wasted surplus assets/resources. In addition, Rheaply powers a shared economy for surplus resources when equipment and assets are no longer needed internally, so that qualified universities, non-profits, and charities can make better use of such assets/resources. We require support in creating awareness of our solution by connecting with large organizations - both on the supplier side as well as heath care organizations in need of supplies.

What do you think are the main barriers to implementing this solution?

There are a few barriers at this time: *Companies are focused on adapting new workflows to accommodate work from home situations and they may be reluctant to register to new offerings, even if they support their mission *There is a constant flow of ads and promotions of how businesses can survive COVID, allowing ‘analysis paralysis’ to set in *Each organization requires a stakeholder to drive flow of resources on Rheaply, it is not always clear who this person is at receiving organizations (they may also not have capacity given the circumstances) *Ensuring that all equipment is certified as per required standards for medical use

If you are currently working on a pivot, what have you learned so far?

We have learned that implementation throughout organizations continues to be a struggle. Organizations are constantly presented with multiple solutions to help address various aspects of their businesses, and therefore they face a lack of clarity on deciding which projects to prioritize. From a resource perspective, there is a top down disconnect between what is needed and what is supplied. The demand/supply is very complex and that simple tools used across organizations don’t service the need sufficiently. There is an opportunity to increase efficiency in drastic ways to improve supply chain through technology (as Rheaply is aiming to do).

Are you aware of any open source efforts, hackathons or other collaborative efforts related to your solution? Are you participating in these efforts?

While there are some organizations that are facilitating these conversations through community sharing, many are using excel spreadsheets and listserv to raise awareness about needs or supply across various geographies. We are doing our best to spread the word of our offering in effort to save time for teams/individuals.
