AquaTime is a smart and connected solution to reduce the risk of dehydration. The smart "puck" measures the liquid intake and regularly transmits data via a IoT-narrowband connection to the cloud where the data can be used for monitoring. The "puck" can be attached to other drinking vessels such as bottles and mugs. It can be set up to send drinking reminders (based on an AI-algorithm taking weather and personal factors and lifestyle into account). The system can be used for urgent deployment (in case dehydration is suspected), the glass (which is available in "glass" or "plastics") is always connected and not dependent on bluetooth or wifi access. The AquaTime system, having been developed for the public elderly care sector in Denmark, can via APIs be connected to exisiting ICT-based care systems and enables a uniform process on how to deal with the risk of dehydration.

What is the need are you focusing on?

With social distancing in place and the hot Summer season arriving, there is an increased risk that symptoms of dehydration are overlooked. AquaTime offers a way to reduce the risk of dehydration.

Which type of submission are you sharing?

  • Sharing a pivot idea your organization is considering or could consider

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

The system has been developed together with professional caretakers and end-users being part of the public care services offered by Danish municipalities. Many of the adressed needs, however, seem to be relevant for individual seniors and their informal caretakers (e.g. family and friends). In the United States (according to MSD, 2019), nearly 30% of the 46 million older people who live in the community (as opposed to an institution, such as a nursing home) live alone. About half of people who are 85 years or older who live in the community live alone. About three quarters of older people living alone are women. The pivot could be to deploy the solution in the consumer market - aimed at American women.

Do you plan to implement this solution?

  • I plan to share with an implementing organization

Describe the impact that this solution will create in the world.

A British cohort study “Dehydration and clinical outcome in hospitalized older adults” states that dehydration was noted in 8.9% of all patients and was the primary cause of admission in 0.6% of the cases. In Denmark, figures from 2014 shows out of 460,000 hospital admissions of +65 seniors, 14.6% were “preventable” and of those around a third was due to simple dehydration. With an average cost per admission of €2,900, the "societal loss" in Denmark was around €64 million (not taking the human suffering).

Ideally, we would like to find a partner in the USA.

What do you think are the main barriers to implementing this solution?

The roll-out of the required narrowband infrastructure is not complete or evenly distributed. We have experience with NB-IoT infrastructure from Telia (Swedish Telecom), TDC (Danish Telecom) and Vodafone (pan-European). Each offer different antenna coverage.

If you are currently working on a pivot, what have you learned so far?

We were supposed to be doing a test-deployment in a municipality in Southern Spain (very different climate and culture compared to Denmark) - based on Vodafone's IoT infrastructure. We have learned that the NB-IoT coverage in rural areas migh be less than expected. Due to the COVID-19, we have not done tests with end-users yet.

Are you aware of any open source efforts, hackathons or other collaborative efforts related to your solution? Are you participating in these efforts?

None that we know of. We are not participating in any.
