Our Organization, Childhood Neuropsychiatric Disorders Initiatives (CNDI) has been involved in Maternal and Child Mental Health care and research in the past. One of the barrier to seeking mental health care by pregnant and post-partum women for themselves and their children is stigma which prevent physical visitation to mental health clinic. Our Organization seek to collaborate with  LAFIYA-UK Support for Health in Nigeria to provide telehealth services in this area. We seek to develop partnership with LAFIYA-UK Support for Health in Nigeria (https://devtracker.dfid.gov.uk/projects/GB-GOV-1-300495) in this regard.

What is the need are you focusing on?

Increase accessibility to maternal and child mental health services at Primary Health Care level. This would promote physical and emotional well-being of children during the early developing period and that of their mothers.

Which type of submission are you sharing?

  • Identifying a gap that needs to be addressed

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

We are considering providing remote mental health services for Women and their children. These include addressing the issue of maternal depression, emotional and developmental well-being of the children. We believe these telehealth services would close the mental health gaps at primary health care level in Nigeria. This idea would made our Organization to partner with LAFIYA-UK Support for Health in Nigeria (https://devtracker.dfid.gov.uk/projects/GB-GOV-1-300495).

Do you plan to implement this solution?

  • Yes

Describe the impact that this solution will create in the world.

This solution would promote easy accessibility to mental health care by pregnant women and those in post-partum period which would impact on the care of their children leading to good physical and emotional development of these children. This accessibility to mental health care would be at primary care level in Nigeria. This would affect a large number of women in rural and urban communities in Nigeria. We hope to be able to evaluate the impact of this program within a 12 months period from the date of commencement.

What do you think are the main barriers to implementing this solution?

The main barriers to implementing this idea may include internet access and regular electricity, but the use of solar power and mobile internet services may be able to circumvent these barriers.

If you are currently working on a pivot, what have you learned so far?

Main lesson we have learnt is that mental health stigmatization, especially in sub-Saharan African context often reduce access to mental health services. We believe remote or online mental health consultation as proposed by this idea may be able to solve the barriers so created by stigmatization.

Are you aware of any open source efforts, hackathons or other collaborative efforts related to your solution? Are you participating in these efforts?

We are hoping to partner with the implementation effort of Department of International Development Funded LAFIYA-UK Support for Health in Nigeria (https://devtracker.dfid.gov.uk/projects/GB-GOV-1-300495).
