The Covid-19 pandemic has revealed that there is a need for humans to collaborate their efforts in tackling global issues. No group is irrelevant in every fight and it is in this light we strive to reach the most vulnerable groups including people living  in extreme poverty usually in remote communities.

Having understood key barriers this group faces such as lack of basic education and low technology, we came up with an innovative idea to create a system of automated responses about the coronavirus using short dial codes on mobile devices.

The  codes offered will vary for telecommunications service providers. Once dialed, will deliver responses aimed at teaching people about the virus including basic facts and  preventive measures, especially how to use Personal Protective Equipments (PPEs), what to do in case a person is showing symptoms; how to self-isolate and report cases.

What is the need are you focusing on?

Rural populations are often left behind when it comes to accessing timely information due to lack of access to resources and services. Presently, efforts to  create awareness about the pandemic is typically done  through the social media and internet. This usually requires the use of smartphones and data which is uncommon in remote areas.

The implication is a widened knowledge gap about the disease. There needs to be an adaptive and reliable medium of communication.

Which type of submission are you sharing?

  • Identifying a gap that needs to be addressed

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

Considering the fact that indigenous peoples are often less educated and do not have access to internet services, dial codes offered by major telecommunications service providers will offer adequate, timely and reliable information about Covid-19 to callers. This requires no internet and can be accessed on any device at any time of the day. Communication will also be more effective when messages are passed in native dialect.

Do you plan to implement this solution?

  • Yes

Describe the impact that this solution will create in the world.

An automated system of delivering information to everyone without the barrier of internet services provides easy access to information will highly benefit rural populations who constitute 70% of populations in Sub-Saharan Africa. When people in rural communities are enlightened about this disease, they will be more conscious of observing hygiene practices and therefore help in controlling the spread of the virus in remote areas which presently accounts for less than half of total cases nationwide. Within a month of project implementation, reported cases can be stifled to as low as 1-20.
