Currently in development the solution is an SMS and USSD based surveillance tool, that can collect standard case definition signals for COVID-19 from date entered by community health volunteers, across Africa. The system will be augmented by analysis of “chatter” or other unstructured data, such as texts from the public as well as monitoring media reports, rumours, stories, social media and websites. Allowing governments, to make best use of available test kits and prioritise intervention areas likely to have the most impact, while balancing out the social and economic shocks of Covid -19. A phased roll out will see the development of a Social Distancing enabling App,  that will leverage surveillance data, to provide social distancing assistance, by categorising essential service outlets into zones based on the number of suspected and confirmed cases and allow users allow users to identify the most suitable/ safest outlet to patronise, from the available options at any given time, based on the level of traffic/footfall. The third and final phase will see the application used to trace contacts of patients that test positive, by leveraging the use of blockchain technology to trace contacts of patients who test positive in an anonymous manner.

What is the need are you focusing on?

Our solution is to digitise Kenya’s and indeed most of Africa's analogue, delay prone Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response systems that rely on paper tools, currently unusable The big idea is to provide the Ministry of Health with precision tools, to detect outbreaks early and then leverage this data to develop a social distancing assitance and contact tracing app.

Which type of submission are you sharing?

  • Sharing a pivot idea your organization is considering or could consider

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

A Social Distancing enabling App, that will leverage surveillance data, to provide social distancing assistance, by categorising essential service outlets into zones based on the number of suspected and confirmed cases and allow users allow users to identify the most suitable/ safest outlet to patronise, from the available options at any given time, based on the level of traffic/footfall. An additional phase will see the application used to trace contacts of patients that test positive, by leveraging the use of blockchain technology to trace contacts of patients who test positive in an anonymous manner.

Do you plan to implement this solution?

  • Yes

Describe the impact that this solution will create in the world.

1. Make smart use of health surveillance data to enable citizens assess their level of risk or exposure. 2. In our new normal, manage human traffic, by providing the data to allow people to distribute day to day activities across the day/evening and avoid creating potentially hazardous bottlenecks. 3. Enable contact tracing while making it possible for people to maintain their privacy.

If Yes to the above, please share 1-2 sentences describing the specific help you desire.

1. Partnerships with a funder to advance the idea 2. partnerships with Tech companies that have mapping data/big data that we could leverage to improve the social distancing and contact tracing applications.

What do you think are the main barriers to implementing this solution?

1. Funding to advance the idea, to cater for the cost of development and roll out across Africa, where devices and airtime will be required for surveillance. 2. The different levels of readiness or preparedness of the community health strategy to make the digital switch across Africa. 2. Development of a social distancing and contact tracing application that will not infringe on user privacy

If you are currently working on a pivot, what have you learned so far?

1. There a partners such as Amref and MedicModible who have done tremendous ground work in this area and have great footprint in Africa. We are glad to be in contact with both. 2. For surveillance data in Africa, we will need to think about sms and USD as most CHW do not have smart phones. 3. Google is very protective of clients mapping data
