Many medical personal in developing countries like South Africa work in facilities that don't have enough equipment and some don't have the required equipment to measure some patient vital signs,the specific vital signs(breathing rate,heart rate & temperature).As an example,many clinics and hospitals don't have equipment to measure the breathing rate and have to resort to manually count the breathing rate by looking at the chest movement of a patient which is prone to errors through miscounting.In rural areas, care givers who visit patients at their homes don't have any way to measure the vital signs when visiting a patient for a check up.Nurses in hospitals have to record vital signs of admitted patients in hospitals every 4 hours on average to ensure effective monitoring of the patient.The non-touch vital signs detector we are proposing to make can detect the vital signs of Body Temperature, Heart Rate, Respiration Rate without the need to touch a patient.The technology behind our proposed product is a low power mmWave sensor which can detect the Heart Rate & Respiration Rate and a temperature sensor to measure temperature.Being able to detect these vital signs in a way that decreases the risks from unnecessary physical contact  for medical professionals will be important going forward.The proposed detector would be small enough to fit in your pocket whilst allowing a medical professional to send through the vital data through the sigfox network to be accessible to other medical professionals in the organisation through a cloud based platform.

A non-touch vital signs detector to allow medical staff to detect vital signs without needing to touch a patient.The detector would be able to upload the vital sign information through the sigfox network to a cloud based platform which would allow doctors situated in far places to advise care givers who can access patients in remote areas should a patient need highly skilled medical attention.The detector would allow hospitals to have an easy to access medical information database by medical staff of the patients vital signs, in a safe digital location instead of the current paper based recording method in hospitals in our region.

The vital signs detectors would decrease the health risks for medical staff associated with touching a patient to get vital signs.It would allow Doctors to have quick access to medical information of patients they can't reach due to their remote home locations, which would allow them to give medical judgement on patients should their medical status need to be escalated urgently.Medical facilities like hospitals and clinics would have a digital record of patients that have been treated or being treated and can allow data based decisions to inform medical staff even if they are remotely located from the facility.These benefits would be felt by medical staff,patients who can get quicker decisions from skilled doctors for urgent escalations and medical entities who have medical data accessible digitally.

If you are currently working on a pivot, what have you learned so far?

Medical staff in our clinics and hospitals are afraid when going to work now, with this current crises that poses a higher risk to them as medical staff.The inadequate equipment in our medical institutions has created a great deal of fear amongst our frontline medical personal.Our proposed product solution was well liked by the medical staff we spoke too as part of design research.The technology exists currently to achieve the goals of the our proposed device.
