Having observed the challenge faced in the current fight against COVID-19 it is evident that the initial priority of any authority in containing the spread of the disease is in early identification of infected persons so as to take the required containment or treatment measures.

Identifying and tracking people who have been exposed to the risk of infection is a critical function, which however can be difficult given the complexity of human mobility.

We see a possibility of deploying appropriate technology to facilitate the critical function of helping the authorities as well as individuals track their possible exposure to infection.

We envision the use of big data analytics and mobile phone technology to enable a swift, efficient and empowering capability for government as well as individuals to track possible exposure and take appropriate action in good time.

It is the intention of this project to create a mobile app solution to assist individuals and the authorities to identify their exposure risk and therefore take the appropriate safeguards to obtain treatment and or protect others from further infection.

What is the need are you focusing on?

Using mobile technology and big data analytics we can improve the speed with which contact with infected persons can be traced and prevented. The solution will empower the health authorities to map the risk and growth of infections more accurately over specific regions and deploy timely and appropriate interventions.

Individuals will be able to map their own risk of exposure and obtain the necessary guidance based on their personal exposure to infection risk.

This solution would also provide indicators of high risk zones by highlighting the concentration of infections and likelihood of infection to alert individuals from exposing themselves unnecessarily.

Given that no country is likely to test the entire population, this solution provides a tool to ensure fast and precise tracing of those people under highest risk of infection.

The solution design is meant to ensure that the platform can support similar requirements for tracking other diseases other than COVID-19 now or in future.

Which type of submission are you sharing?

  • Identifying a gap that needs to be addressed

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

We are addressing a gap in accurate and personalised COVID-19 pandemic contact tracing and risk assessment using mobile technology and data science.

Do you plan to implement this solution?

  • Yes

Describe the impact that this solution will create in the world.

The positive impact will be seen in increased capacity for earlier infection detection, earlier isolation, earlier treatment and most importantly earlier prevention of further infection. This will have the inevitable effect of reducing the pandemic casualties and therefore saving lives. Individual users of the mobile app will take more responsibility in tracking their own movements and exposure because they will have been empowered through access to timely and accurate information. This should reduce the government's burden in public awareness and communication by creating a constant and personalised comms channel through mobile. This solution would be relevant and useful to the entire Kenyan population which can hold a mobile phone. It can also be extended to the neighbouring countries in Africa as well as elsewhere in the world. In Kenya this solution would serve at least 20mn people whereas in the rest of East Africa this number would reach at least 50Mn. Our aim is to rollout in June 2020 after which we expect to experience and start measuring impact immediately with a full initial impact report possible within 3 months from launch.

There are global institutions with objectives which align well with what we are setting out to accomplish. Such institutions have the capacity and brand recognition which can propel our innovation into a massive rollout and great social impact. At our current start up stage we do not have the access to or recognition by such potential partners. The required help is in connecting us with such partners to support especially the initial rollout so as minimise the cost burden on users.
