Gynaefy is a mobile application project that serves to mitigate Gender Based Violence complaints and help to smartly refer survivors to appropriate Gender Based Violence service providers.

This project would serve rural and urban dwellers.  In the rural areas, the app would have corresponding USSD codes/numbers in areas where they are not tech savy. In Urban areas and areas where they have access to smart devices, the mobile app would serve as a Grievance Redress Mechanism by connecting survivors using GPS/GIS to the closest Gynaefy approved healthcare worker.

Gynaefy would help in not just generating appropriate data for intervention, prompt intervention, access to survivors who find it difficult to make report, physically challenged who form a great quota of survivors.

The Gynaefy app is planned to be inconspicuous/camouflaged on mobile devices as perpetrators of such acts are usually around the survivor.

The Gynaefy app's user interface and wire frame has been designed. The structural design is yet to be designed, hence the need for funding. Our Gynaefy work plan document would indication time lines for project implementation. It is time for Africa to take the lead on Mitigating Gender based violence as the continent tops the chart on almost all forms of all Gender Based Violence including Harmful practices such as Female Genital Mutilation and Child Marriages. Reports for these incidences has to be scaled up using this novel intervention.

What is the need are you focusing on?

In Africa, 35% i.e. 1 in 3 women have experience intimate partner violence and/or sexual violence. One out of every five women will become a victim of rape or attempted rape over the course of her lifetime.

World wide, during this COVID-19 pandemic, it is now 1 in 2 women are experiencing Gender Based Violence.

In Africa, there is a whole lot of under reporting. Less than 40% of survivors report cases cases in their lifetime.

In Africa under reporting is at its peak. This is due to fear or retribution, stigmatization, shame, not being believed, fiancial dependence on partner, lack of adequate legal, forensic,  and other Gender Based Violence Service providers.

These vulnerable group form the backbone of any economy. We see a need for intervention, more so in this pandemic to scale up achieving Sustainable Development Goal

Which type of submission are you sharing?

  • Sharing a pivot idea your organization is considering or could consider

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

Its an already developing idea on smart ways to resolve Gender Based Violence reporting in both urban and rural areas. The Gynaefy Project is a Non Profit Solution. Every funding generated would be channeled to the functioning of the app and using it as a platform to projects on GBV (Gender Based Violence)

Do you plan to implement this solution?

  • Yes

Describe the impact that this solution will create in the world.

Gender Based Violence mostly affects Women and Girls. It could also affect children and men. Under-reporting by survivors is clearly the biggest contributor to the increase in cases of Gender based violence due to shame, fear of retribution, stigma, religious and cultural beliefs. Gynaefy would serve as a Grievance Redress Mechanism would help to scale up reporting by 75% (many really want to make reports bu are scared to). Gynaefy would serve as Africa's foremost tool for DATA generation for all forms of Gender Based Violence. This would serve as a tool for intervention by state-Country governments, local and International NGOs. The Gynaefy app not only serves Women and Girls, but will be a major tool for physically challenged, who have an increased prevalence of GBV in Africa.
