Under served communities especially in the developing economies are dependent on public toilet infrastructure or shared sanitation services. We at GARV toilets have been working in under served areas for provision of public toilets which are indestructible and IoT enabled. Most of the public toilets face issues with respect to vandalism and irregular maintenance, this is where our toilet products plug in the gaps. GARV Toilets are made out of stainless steel and integrated with IoT infrastructure where sensors provide real-time updates on maintenance issues of toilets, tracking user hygiene parameters like percentage of users washing hands, or flushing toilets as well. The toilets minimize human interference as they are automated for self-cleaning and self-flushing as well. Over the past 5 years, GARV has installed 900+ smart toilets across 68 locations in multiple countries for the benefit of under privileged communities.

With user hygiene being promoted more and more in these overwhelming times, it becomes all the more important for our assets to provide completely hygienic services to people who are solely dependent on these toilets. Social distancing is a distant dream in slum area settlements and people rely on shared services.

We have integrated and tested atomized nozzle sprays to our toilet products, which will be controlled and operated through our existing automation systems and IoT sensors. After every usage, when the toilet will trigger the self-cleaning process, the disinfectant sprays will be operated for a period of 20 seconds to decontaminate the toilet facility. Complete process will be tracked and monitored on our dashboards, where the system will provide alarms for refilling of disinfectants, number of users, total disinfectant used etc.

What is the need are you focusing on?

Public toilet spaces are used by vulnerable communities living in densely populated areas where they do not have the luxury of maintaining safe hygienic practices.

We are proposing to integrate our IoT enabled toilet facilities to be integrated with automated disinfectant spray nozzles, that sanitize the toilet unit after every/few uses with controlled atomized spray of disinfectants. The spray is controlled through sensors for 20 seconds and disinfects the toilet surfaces such that it becomes a safe toilet to be used by next users.

  • Sharing a pivot idea your organization is considering or could consider

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

Shared sanitation services, public toilets, community toilets are mostly provided for people who lack access to sanitation services. A big percentage of people live in densely populated areas of developing economies and are the most vulnerable during the COVID19 phase. Our idea is to provide automated decontamination nozzle sprays in each public toilet unit such that the whole toilet is disinfected after every use, and the process is controlled automatically. Essentially, after every/few uses the toilet cabin becomes a decontamination chamber, where the surfaces are disinfected with an atomized spray of disinfectants such that it is safe for next few users. The beneficiaries would largely be people of all ages, adolescent girls, women in developing economies who are dependent on using public toilet facilities.

Do you plan to implement this solution?

  • Yes

Describe the impact that this solution will create in the world.

With the assault of Covid19, communities living in under served areas have been severely impacted economically, psychologically & physically. There livelihoods are at stake and they are not getting access to nutritional food. With fewer earning members and various dependent members in the family, they are living stressful lives amidst the lock down period. The immunity levels of these community members is assumed to be at all time low and they are the most vulnerable group. Although with the efforts of the government, people are now aware of precautionary measures but they don't have the privilege of having access to various essentials & services for maintaining proper hygiene. With our presence of 900+ toilets, we reach out to 170000+ under served community members everyday which includes, 18000+ children, 100000+ women and adolescent girls. With this idea, we propose safe sanitation services with integration of automated decontamination nozzles in our toilet assets.
