Building off expertise working with children affected by crisis, the COVID-19 Response Consortium including Amal Alliance, Karanga, Learning in Times of Crisis: Essence of Learning, Qatar Foundation International, Salzburg Global Seminar, and experts, employs their complementary strengths to provide practical support for the children and caregivers through a comprehensive approach.

The consortium will provide adaptive tools applicable to culture & context for the different age groups that keep in mind that materials are limited, but require a strategic partner to reach the more vulnerable populations that can benefit from such programming. Please note our collective mission is to prioritize child protection above all and immediate support during times of crisis.

Given growing COVID-19 concerns, time is of the essence. Suggested date for podcast distribution is mid-April. Due to the lack of resources so many children are experiencing, the guidance provided can protect affected children, promote resilience in families, and mitigate more long term ramifications. This proposal is to begin in refugee camps and urban communities of displaced populations in Northern Greece & Lebanon. The possibility to scale  to other affected areas is high, as it can be applicable to other contexts with the various universal themes covered.

The response will be administered virtually through a podcast series addressing needs of all age groups with different thinking abilities, along with engaging parents in the activities. Podcasts will include different aspects and activities that go with child protection and wellbeing in this COVID-19 crisis and the related topics that also affect learning and the reintegration into schools.

Podcast topics include subjects such as hygiene, empathy, tolerance, coping mechanisms. Worksheets that compliment the podcasts with easy to follow examples of activities will also be distributed via Whatsapp. Through a daily activity, virtual family to family engagement will be cultivated, which fosters expression during the isolation period.

What is the need are you focusing on?

In displaced communities, the impact of COVID-19 could be extreme, given the prevalence of underlying health conditions, poor nutrition, and weak health systems, and school closures. The pandemic is likely going to further affect the emotional wellbeing of children and their families who have already been affected by trauma. It is important to protect children’s emotional wellbeing as much as their physical safety. As children feel vulnerable and overwhelmed, it’s important to initially focus on providing a sense of safety and security. With the current circumstances COVID-19 is presenting to parents and caregivers, a proper and timely response is needed to uphold programmatic efforts that ensure children and their caregivers are supported in these times of uncertainty.

Which type of submission are you sharing?

  • Sharing an actual pivot your organization has already made

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

We are reframing our current educational model to allow us to implement a multiple-stage response. This updated model will continue to promote social development while counseling the communities on health and hygiene preventative measures. This model includes: a podcast, worksheets, and community ambassadors. 1) A podcast that is accessible to parents and caregivers with guidance on creative methodologies to enhance learning and foster expression during this isolation period. It will cover a variety of important topics including hygiene, creativity, empathy, emotions, and relationships. 2) Child-focused worksheets that provide parents and caregivers with coping activities, games, exercises, and meditations to use with their children to ease anxiety during this period. 3) Working closely with ambassadors and partner organizations who support the communities from the ground level so that we have a better understanding of the day-to-day issues each community faces in this evolving.

Do you plan to implement this solution?

  • Yes

Describe the impact that this solution will create in the world.

Every crisis is a dynamic process that is considered in the plan of action. Not only will this joint initiative impact the lives of many displaced communities that are currently not being serviced, but will create more opportunities for the future leaders of tomorrow. It will serve as a pilot study for a prospective crisis. The podcast is intended to be distributed in the later part of April to numerous displaced communities via Whatsapp in Greece, Lebanon, and possibly Mexico & Columbia. With further support, this program can be scaled to reach not only displaced communities, but other vulnerable disenfranchised populations in distress. Furthermore, there is limited research in regards to the effectiveness of storytelling and audio response. This presents an opportunity to assess a new form of response for extraordinary times.

What does your business/company do? Whose needs does your business/company address? Who do you serve?

The Amal Alliance, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) dedicated to empowering displaced and disenfranchised children through 4 pillars of support: 1) psychosocial support, 2) social-emotional learning, 3) early childhood development, and 4) peacebuilding. Our programming was highlighted by UNHCR as one of the “most promising holistic practices” at the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva, as our holistic approach stimulates the mind and body through education and integration programs that focus on social emotional learning and address trauma at its root cause. These programs allow children to find inner strength and resilience despite their challenging circumstances.
