Breath is designed to deliver oxygen to a patient's lungs when their life is in danger and a doctor, nurse or paramedic is not able to use a professional ventilator.

The device is designed aid patients who require invasive ventilation due to respiratory failure caused by SARS-CoV-2.

Breath is designed to meet the minimum clinical requirements for ventilators during the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Mudita decided to base the construction of their ventilator on the AMBU bag (otherwise known as a bag valve mask), a popular resuscitation and ventilation kit that is used in almost every hospital and ambulance, to provide patients with additional oxygen when necessary.

Mudita constructed a mechanism that presses on the AMBU bag and helps to deliver oxygen to the lungs. The medical practitioner can set the parameters, such as the air capacity and pressing frequency. Pressure sensors that monitor the whole mechanism and can report a potential fault are also included.

What is the need are you focusing on?

The device is designed aid patients who require invasive ventilation due to respiratory failure caused by SARS-CoV-2.

It is constructed from the components that are available right now and will allow local assembly.

We also focused on portability and that it can operate on a battery for up to 5 hours

(we're still testing how much time exactly)

Which type of submission are you sharing?

  • Sharing a pivot idea your organization is considering or could consider

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

As a company we needed to divide the efforts in the team, to maintain our current product development plan of the products that we already committed to deliver & create a space for this additional project. It's the first time for our company to work on a medical product, the good thing is that our teammates had previous experience working for certification company, but the key was to form a team with the experts from the outside of our organization- we have 2 experienced doctors, and collaborating with the production company that is already producing medical equipment. If we want to start mass production we will need to adjust our procedure to meet the requirements of a certification process which is timely and expensive.

Do you plan to implement this solution?

  • Yes

Describe the impact that this solution will create in the world.

We hope that this solution will eliminate the problem when the shortage of ventilators forced the doctors to choose which patients will get help. Our low-cost solution can help in the developing nations, where purchasing expensive medical equipment is simply inaccessible for them. We also see a great potential for the use in the ambulances, as right now they often use the manual one, so the doctor is required to run the machine manually. This kind of devices should be in each hospital floor to be accessible as quickly as possible to buy doctors the time to organize a standard ventilator.

Having an affordable and accessible alternative for ventilators would make an incredible impact on the COVID-19 crisis, I applaud you for pivoting towards this solution! I think it's especially important for new ventilator designs to be accessible on a global scale, meaning that there is no shortage of materials needed to make the device and that the device could be readily implemented in any country. I'm interested in learning more about the accessibility as your project progresses.
