Anonymous employee happiness tracking by them, and for them using the Happy Atoms Index (HAI)

The HAI is based on anonymous employee data that enables honest and effective happiness tracking for the companies that they work for.

Happy Atoms is an application that will be allowing employees to track their happiness every day through separate interface to their work setups. Without the integration of work software, employees will be able to be honest about their well-being and as a result give constructive feedback about their working life.

With a one page tap-only interface, Happy Atoms will not be time-consuming, unless the employee would like to add comments themselves. This will amount to a Happy Atoms Index which will be fully based on the scores that employees give for themselves thus representing an accurate depiction of the working happiness levels at that company.

The issue with current happiness tracking is that a lot of it is adopted by the company with filters to be able to track who says what. This can hinder employees to give their true feedback whether positive, negative or in-between. With Happy Atoms, the calculations are made simpler, the anonymity is there, and the result would be driving employers to get accurate feedback in the age of remote working.

The pivot to more remote work puts into place gaps in communication in a way that there is less physical or 'real' interaction. What people feel behind the screen is harder to determine, so being able to anonymously see the happiness levels of your employees can serve as direct feedback to what is working and what isn't.

We want to help everyone celebrate their employers that have given them real support during this time and make it anonymous for there to be more transparency.

What is the need are you focusing on?

In the age of remote work and preparing for a post-COVID professional life, we want to bring anonymous happiness tracking to make sure everyone working is keeping up with their well-being as they should. This can give real insight into how remote work or even eventual face-to-face work, is impacting employees in the context of the company that they work for.

Which type of submission are you sharing?

  • Sharing a pivot idea your organization is considering or could consider

Describe the business pivot or adaptation in 3-4 sentences.

Initially, we want to address remote-working engagement/satisfaction and index for working parent engagement/satisfaction as both are underserved groups. We want to use a measurable term, the HAI, to locate the needs of employees and parents in specific regions before scaling it to the rest of the world. The key is for us to gather indices of happiness to help everyone improve the quality of their remote work. We already see the impact of privacy and anonymity with our previous application, City Atoms, and we want to translate this to happiness.

Do you plan to implement this solution?

  • Yes

Describe the impact that this solution will create in the world.

Employees and working parents especially will feel safe to express their happiness levels like never before. As a result, accurate information will allow companies to know where to focus on in their infrastructure to boost their employee happiness creating a positive feedback curve more than anything. Remote working is not new but it has never been done at the scale that it is at now. Hence, this makes for the perfect time to allow employees to actively engage in making their post-COVID professional life the best and happiest it can be. Happiness is a human thing, it spans across borders and ethnicities and even fields of work. A happiness index, while specifically and personally created, will be understood globally and that is unprecedented. Moreover, future employees can see the index of the company and understand how well on the index spectrum their desired company is at and can see how well-aligned they are with the company's priorities to employee wellbeing.

What is the name of your business or organization?

Happy Atoms

What does your business/company do? Whose needs does your business/company address? Who do you serve?

We initially created an application for private contact tracing with two functions: symptom tracking and heat map creation demonstrating risk for COVID-19 infections. We didn't want people to choose between being safe and staying private. So we are essentially translating this into the desire to pivot to documenting happiness in the workplace. Employees should be able to actively report their happiness levels anonymously. We want to highlight the concern for privacy and anonymity, but get effective and honest data for them to reflect on. The index related to the criteria would be the only thing shared with the company. No identities or tracking involved at all.

  • Yes

If Yes to the above, please share 1-2 sentences describing the specific help you desire.

We would like to find iOS and Android developers to help us as we are formerly a non-profit that built the current infrastructure. We want to be connected with people who believe in happiness as much as we do for solid collaborations to make Happy Atoms a reality.

What do you think are the main barriers to implementing this solution?

The main barrier that we project is that honesty often comes in the positive and the negative side. Through companies implementing us, there is always a concern where employees would only track their bad days for example and then that would negatively impact the index of that company in particular. Hence, we aim to take this into consideration and make sure that our data collection is simple for employees and also constant. We will not account solely for outliers or for few entries. As we develop this, we want to make sure employees are constantly engaging through a one-page tap input process so it's not burdensome. We want to ask them the right questions that are specific to their field as well.

If you are currently working on a pivot, what have you learned so far?

We are currently working to build Happy Atoms conceptually and we found that anonymity is the power of this application idea. We spoke to people in different fields, and we found it removes anxieties from employees due to lack of transparency where their happiness tracking is going.

Are you aware of any open source efforts, hackathons or other collaborative efforts related to your solution? Are you participating in these efforts?

Not any that we know of that target working parents, and remote workers happiness.
