Art & Involvement

Art is not supposed to change the world, to change practical things, but to change perceptions. Art can change the way we see the world. Art can create an analogy. -JR

Doing starts with knowing. Semi-autonomous French Artist JR used photography and launched an (illegal) art exhibition in the war-torn towns of Iraq and Palestine called Face 2 Face in the midst of the Middle-Eastern Conflict. His project had portraits of Iraqis and Palestinians side by side, making a face as a sign of support, and put up in Iraqi and Palestinian towns alike. It gave a face to the enemy. 4 years after, and some of them still remain.

The project of giving a face to the problem has been repeated by JR in Brazil for the Providencia killings, as well as championing the role of women in Kibera, Kenya and some more in India.

This inspiration drives across the message, like so many other inspirations here on using art to motivate and galvanize communities, that while art cannot change the world, it changes perception. And that's when the real change begins.
