Nowadays, people live in apartment which is really close to neighbors in Taipei. But there are seldom interactions between neighbors. And the young generations are smart phone addicts, that they might get lots of information from the internet, but seldom from books.

Place a bookshelf next to the mailboxes of the community. Anyone who wants to share books (or object) can put them in the bookshelf with their name. The bookshelf will be locked after being filled with books and objects, and the conservator will have the key. So if someone fined a book interesting, he or she can send a letter to the owner’s mailbox inform“who and how long they want to borrow what.” After the owners decide to borrow it, they will put the books into borrowers’ mailbox. Therefore people know who is reading their books, might have some conversation in the community.

How does your concept inspire collaboration between individuals, private sector organisations, and the government in an effort to create cleaner neighbourhoods?

Not only it’s good to start reading habit since there will be so many books next to the mailbox, where people passing by every day. But also people can share the information from books and discuss with others. The bookshelves will be set up by the government, and the communities have the responsibility to take care of them.

How might your concept be scaled in a way that creates even more connections between people?

This concept can be scaled by putting the bookshelf in dorms, or offices. (as long as there are mailboxes.) It’s a small library, but you know who read and share the books before. And it might creates more connections between different ages of people.

How might you design a small experiment around your concept that would mobilise action?

I can put my old bookshelf with some of my books downstairs. and send the project outline to neighbors, see if they are interesting in this concept.

Yin, great concept. I can see adding books/pamphlets on "topics" to make the community better. For instance, information on how to better recycle, plant a garden, save energy etc...

thanks for your comment.
exactly, the topics of the books could be anything they want to share with others. and people can even share "tools", as long as the object is useful and can put into the bookshelf.
