Gene editing of mosquito is no doubt one of the ways to eradicate Zika and other mosquito borne diseases likeYellow Fever, West Nile Virus, Chikungunya and Dengue Fever. It could also be argued as the quickest and most effective method.

As far as I research, there can be two options of modifications (a) making mosquito offspring die prematurely or (b) making mosquito disease resistant

There are also questions about: How this new power would affect the world? What are we are going to use it for in the future? Will all scientists be cautious and responsible when every lab can do it easily in the future?

You can watch Jennifer Kahn asking these questions.

Hi Kyaw Tun Sein,

Did you know there are conspiracy theories on GM mosquitos?

R H so many truthers out there!

John Kiernan-Lewis there are definitely unforeseen consequences to solutions that we come up as a global community.... one problem leads to another. How might we be fully knowledgeable about the consequences or calculate the fallout?

Hey Minh!

It's true, almost frustratingly so, that a great solution can sometimes have unwanted side effects. It is our responsibility as problem-solvers to make sure that we recognize the risks involved and are not blind-sided by the ramifications of our solutions. In the case of genetic modification, the benefits that it could possibly bring to our society necessitate that we passionately and thoroughly investigate this great new technology. Lots of research needs to be done before this technology can begin to modify the natural world around us, but I can't wait to see what great new innovations come to fruition on account of these new capabilities in the future.
