STRAW PAK is the all-in-one package design from straw to packaging made of one piece of paper. The straw attached to existing PAK can be lost by external factors (impact or defect) during the process of distribution, sales and usage.

Because of the lost straw, customer will experience inconvenience while drinking and supplier will suffer a serious loss due to the high defective rate. We have come up with the design of STRAW PAK to resolve the inconvenience of customer and supplier. For STRAW PAK, the straw is attached inside to prevent it from losing and customer can easily enjoy the drink by removing the protection cap of the straw. Supplier can decrease the unit price of manufacturing as well as the cost of transportation.

TETRA PAK of which straw is attached outside can have various problems such as loss or damage of straw from different external factors during the process of distribution, sales and usage. If the problem occurs during distribution, the product will be disposed before sales. If the problem occurs after distribution, customers need to use other tool (scissors or cutter) to drink or just dispose it. In this case, customers will experience inconvenience while drinking and suppliers will pay for the cost of disposal.

The problems of loss and damage of straw are resolved by changing the position of straw from outside to inside. We found out that attaching the straw outside can be a cause of problems such as loss or damage so we changed the position of straw. The risk of losing or damaging the straw has been decreased by changing the position of straw and vinyl package of straw as well as the glue to attaché are not necessary anymore.

Where are you / your team located?

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

We moved the role of straw which is to such them removed the plastic straw and its packaging as well as silicon glue. The material of straw attached inside is a special paper like PAK not plastic. Also, PAK and straw are combined into one.Manufacturing process has been reduced and the product has become more environment friendly as plastic, vinyl and glue not used anymore by changing the material of straw from plastic to paper and the position of plastic from outside to inside.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

Will not experience inconvenience since the straw won’t be lost. In addition, STRAW PAK is made of paper so it is more environment friendly.

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

It is Applicable in all regions. All customers drinking beverages with TETRA PAK.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

The blueprint of STRAW PAK will be provided to customers of TETRA PAK and manufacturing company. The strong point of STRAW PAK is it reduces manufacturing process and unit price as it uses a single material. For this reason, it saves the cost of transportation and decreases CO2 emission as larger numbers of PAK can be transported than existing TETRA PAK.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Prototyping: You have conducted some small tests or experiments with prospective users and will continue developing idea through these tests.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

Plastic straw and vinyl to wrap the straw as well as silicon glue to attach the straw to TETRA PAK have been removed. The straw and the package can be made of one piece of paper which is a 6 layered sterilized paper. It can be produced by cutting out paper according to the blueprint then folding it. After that, sealing it after putting the contents (drink or milk) inside before distributing / selling it.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

Our team brainstormed and embodied the idea. I have created various prototypes.

Hi Jenna Jun!

Welcome to refinement! It would be great if you could answer some of the questions below from Vanessa Rodriguez Esparza and Todd.

How would winning an award help advance this idea?

What do you expect the price point to be for STRAW PAK and how does this compare to standard juice boxes?

Can you tell me more about the recyclability of the juice box?

Also, great video of your prototype and comparison of your product to a competitor!

I look forward to seeing some testing with users.

There are a few ideas that you might want to check out as a source of inspiration:

Friendly ATM - https://challenges.openideo.com/challenge/financial-longevity/top-ideas/all-generation-friendly-atm - a top idea from our financial longevity challenge has a great example of rapid, low budget prototyping and gathering feedback from customers. The use of video to demonstrate the prototyping/testing session is really good.

InLid - another idea in refinement - https://challenges.openideo.com/challenge/circular-design/refinement/icecap - has a really good example of using video to demonstrate rapid prototyping and getting feedback from the users

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me by tagging me here (@ followed by my name) or send me an email - krushton@ideo.com

I just want to remind you that the deadline to complete the Refinement Questions via the online submission form is August 31 at 11:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

Hello Kate Rushton?

- The award will help us to develop our ideas and patents.

- I think it is cheaper than a standard juice box. Because there is no straw and vinyl in the existing juice box.

- Recycling can be done according to existing processes. Simply drink all your drinks and put our products in a paper recycling box.

A bunch of these with the same idea made round two. Not sure if they all had the same idea or a bunch were ripping each other off?

Hello Cary Howe?

It is not what you think.

Our team has submitted a long-standing idea here.

Hi Jenna!

Great video and interesting idea!

What are the next steps to develop your idea?

What changes are needed to the current manufacturing process to produce STRAW PAK?

Hello Kate Rushton?

Thank you for comment for us.

The next step in our idea is to make sure the finish is done when the product is finished.

And there will be a change in the manufacturing process of plastic straw production and its attaching process disappearing.

Hi Jenna,
I like your idea and would be curious what type of interior barrier coating/layer you intend on using? Are you going to use the traditional multi-layer type structure? Are you open to making use of innovative barrier materials in support of recyclability? It would be interesting to explore the possibilities and I look forward to your reply. Thanks for your consideration and best of luck with your project. - Todd Gasparik, Smart Planet Technologies (Todd@SmartPlanetTech.com)

Hello Todd?

my name is Jeena JUN. NO Jenna. Plz call me 'Jeena'

Right!

STRAW PAK is multi-layer type structure. (6 layer)

And straw is same. one paper became straw and Beverage Carton.

We do not use any plastic.

so, we use existing recycling systems.

Great idea and beautiful design! Have you thought about doing some sort of tear off tab or explored alternatives to sealing the container without using any plastic? It would elevate this idea even more if it was all one material.

Hello Vanessa Rodriguez Esparza?

Thank you for comment for us.

Right! we don't use any plastic. STRAW PAK only use 1 paper.

straw pak seal also, we are going to use strong paper(Coated paper).

Do you know more detail some Coated paper, or ohter paper for our seal position?

Would you let me know?
