MIWA (MInimumWAste) is a technology and processing system which enables the transport, sale and purchase of goods while minimizing packaging and food waste. The MIWA system’s distinctiveness lies in its complexity as it covers all members of the supply chain from producers to consumers.

By creating a business ecosystem interlinked by technology and information structures, MIWA sets the conditions for trade and consumer behavior so that participating in the system brings a win-win situation to all active subjects. In addition to a strong social and environmental impact, MIWA generates economic results and prerequisites for further development and innovation.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While providing the technological solution to suppliers and retailers we educate people about the concept of PREcycling since we believe that recycling is not sufficient solution and thus creating system change when PREcycling is the new standard.

Our company key outcomes:

  • Waste-less distribution chain: technologies for manufacturers as well as merchants paired with an information system linking the whole distribution chain (a so-called ‘commercial ecosystem’)
  • New customer experience: smartphone application for packaging-free sales and purchases of both edible and non-edible goods.
  • Research and studies: topics include the prevention of waste production with the promotion of pre-cycling methods
  • Proposing legislative changes: adoption of pre-cycling as the new standard for society as well as business.

Idea Title

System change leading to eliminating disposable packaging from the supply chain.

Where are you / your team located?

We are located in Prague, CZ. We are an international team (CZ, NL, IT, US) with global reach.

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

MIWA prevents the production of the unrecyclable small format plastic items. The whole system brings substantial savings in packaging material at the level of transportation (tertiary, secondary packaging) and purchasing (consumer’s own, returnable or degradable packaging). Producers, distributors, and retailers are given a strong device for efficient planning, simple trading, and process rationalization. A consumer is provided with full control over the purchasing process.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

Since our mission is to change the mindset we do target all cases. However, our current technology can handle the first 2 cases (packaging for liquid consumer products and bottle cups).

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

Global. We are launching our solution in Europe and scaling it up to the US.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

st1 We build community around our strong purpose > in full progress st2 We launch own and community formats for testing and proof > in full progress st3 We sell to 3rd party retailers and franchise > we are establishing first contacts st4 We expand and innovate > prepared CH1: To deliver on all aspect of environmental impact we need to consider transportation footprint and build local distribution/logistic centers. CH2: Larger retailers need to see the working case to apply and then scale.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Prototyping: You have conducted some small tests or experiments with prospective users and will continue developing idea through these tests.
  • Piloting: You have started to implement your solution as a whole with a first set of real users. You may have started to develop a business model for your idea, including identifying key customer segments, relevant partnerships, go-to-market strategy, and draft financials.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

1) We would accelerate our activities in areas of education and legislation with added know-how and network possibilities. 2) The actual funding would support our entry to the market. We would use it as an investment into "first small production" after prototyping. The first production will be used in pilot outlets (as per above). 3) If any funding left we would invest in boosting our sales activities to 3rd parties retailers (team + sales activities).

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

The idea of creating a retail solution based on PREcycling, meaning developing a way of effectively selling goods without packaging, was born at the beginning of 2014. Until then my main business focus was creating packaging solutions for different companies, so I actually had the first-hand experience with the strengths and the dark sides of the packaging. Work on the project started immediately in 2014. With the start of 2017, we introduce our project to the world.

HI Petr Baca ,
I really like your idea, being in Australia and the massive super markets here?what do you have to say about closing the supply chain?

Hi Petr Baca
I really like your idea. However, I can imagine it is not a sterile or germ-free solution. That is why I have one question:
Are there possibly more pathogens or germs involved in the alternative packaging solutions?

Hi Carmen,

Thank you for your message and sorry for the late reply.
To answer your question-there are actually less pathogens and germs involved in MIWA solution thanks to the bulk modular system we have developed. The producers put their product in a re-fillable capsule, where an inner pouch protects it. The capsule then goes directly to the store, where it is installed in the so-called bulk modular system (to see how it looks, please visit our website: http://www.miwa.eu). This means that nobody manipulates with the goods from the moment of the capsule filling by the producer until the purchase by the costumer. In MIWA, we focused on maximal hygiene standards during the transportation and distribution of bulk goods. Therefore, the goods are perfectly protected from contamination during the transport and are sold in the highest hygienic conditions afterwards.
The capsules themselves are of course duly checked and cleaned before each repeated use.

Hope this information was useful. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Petr Baca I really like your idea because it perfectly fits into the Circular Economy. It is not enough to reduce waste and recycle materials. A complete rethinking of the whole production process, and maybe of the whole supply chain in needed. I do believe that with your new technology the waste from transport, sale and purchase of goods will be minimized. Good luck

It is such a great idea Petr Baca . Well done. Which materials is your packaging is made of? is it only glass?
And I would like to know more about the technology itself. How is the supply chain of the products going to look like in terms of relationship with retailers and end-users?

Hi Valeria,

Thank you for your support. To answer the first question-it depends on which type of packaging you mean. If you mean the capsules, in which the goods are transported and stored, the main material here is plastic; the capsule consists of a solid outer shell and an inner pouch, which is expected to be manufactured from a highly recyclable material that fits the actual type of good. When it comes to the packaging in which the goods are put for the customers, there are 3 types available: an eco friendly wrapper, a returnable wrapper or a customer’s own.

To see how the technology works, I suggest that your watch the explanatory videos on our website: http://www.miwa.eu/how-it-works.

Retailers:
Basically, we introduce re-usable capsules, which are used to transport the goods from the producer directly to the store, where they are installed to a in-store modular unit. The modular unit serves for both storage and dispensing of the goods. Each capsule contains a chip that can trace the product in real-time. This crucially improves the logistics and store management and it also provides the retailers with data about customer’s shopping behavior.

End-users:
Now, the shopping experience itself will be done virtually, via a mobile app or a scanner. The customers will choose the products from a modular retail device with product cards with a product code. These cards fully replace the existing product packaging as they contain an image, contents and marketing information. Once the customer finishes shopping, a store assistant starts preparing the order.

Hope my answer helped you. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Hi Petr,
It is great to explore MIWA.
Is there a limit on the quantity per sale?
How does it accommodate multiple brands?
Thanks
Manoj

Hello Manoj,

thank you for your interest!

To your questions...

1) The storage and dispensing equipment (referring to BMS in our presentation) is used to store capsules with products and allows easy preparation and dispensing of goods on the basis of customer requirements. Each module allows to store up to 800 liters of goods directly on the sales floor area. (This version is designed primarily for large retailers but we also develop smaller versions.)

The consumer can buy as much as he needs/desires by indicating the amount in MIWA app.

2) The shoppers choose a product from a display (referring to MODULAR DISPLAY in our presentation), which consists of product pack shots. Each pack shot is designed to fulfill legal requirements (product info) and marketing needs (brand/product appeal - so yes, the branded products can be easily sold in MIWA system) and product code, which serves for choosing and buying goods through interaction with a shopping app or scanner.

This is the process:
- The shopper scans code from a display
- In the app/scanner he chooses A) amount he needs B) the packaging he prefers (incl. own or resuable)
- The product order is prepared in real time by shop service
- The shopper collects the product at the moment of payment
- The shopper pays from the app.

Let me know if you have more questions. Thank you.

Hi Petr!

Welcome to refinement phase!

How would you overcome the barrier of brands wanting to front their iconic packaging in the supermarket? How would you get brands on board with your solution?

I look forward to learning more about how this solution works technically and the estimated financials, and also to see more clarity around the business model.

There are a few ideas from previous challenges that you might want to look at:

Unbroke from our higher ed challenge has a well articulated business model - (see the diagram below ‘So, here is our most frequently asked question…; and link to business model) - https://challenges.openideo.com/challenge/higher-ed/impact/unbroke

Also, it would be great to have more clarity around the current stage you are at in the development of your idea. What have you done up until now and what are the next steps?

You can include this in the refinement questions document that has been sent to you.

I just want to remind you that the deadline to complete the Refinement Questions via the online submission form is August 31 at 11:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me by tagging me here (@ followed by my name) or send me an email - krushton@ideo.com

Excellent system your team has developed. In the United States, this system would save grocery stores a lot of money every year. I am excited to see how this develops, will keep an eye out for your future efforts.

Hi Petr!

Great video and interesting idea!

Would you tell more about the legislation issues?

Do you have any existing barriers to developing your idea that you’d like to share to help the OpenIDEO community understand where they might join the conversation and provide feedback?

Can you explain a bit more about how this idea can be implemented at scale? What would need to happen for this design to be brought to market at the local scale? What would it take for this idea to integrate at the scale of implementation you are aiming for?

What is the experience for the customer using this? What would incentivize a customer to use this over alternatives?

Which use cases does your idea apply to - https://d3gxp3iknbs7bs.cloudfront.net/attachments/d7cfea9d-b5a2-4ce3-a8de-3e518a3c4b67.pdf?
