SUMMARY

Our idea is to reduce waste and increase social empowerment. We strive to empower cleaning ladies to sell dehydrated tablets of cleaning products to their neighbors and current customers.

The Dehydrated tabs of concentrated cleaning product generate liters of the desired cleaning product when mixed with water. Tabs are sold individually and also organized in sets by use categories, for example the home set would be composed of all purpose cleaning tabs, glass cleaning tabs, dish cleaning tabs, bathroom cleaning tabs and cloth cleaning tabs. Each tab when mixed with water at home produces liters of the desired cleaning product. Additionally Home set refill containers and replacement tabs of each cleaning product are sold.

Mainly two type of users are identified: 1) cleaning ladies who used to buy their cleaning products in sachets and now will buy them in reusable recyclable cardboard boxes and 2) cleaning ladies current customers who will buy the cleaning tabs, set and bottles directly from the cleaning ladies, switching from single use plastic bottles and sachets to high quality PET refill set boxes and bottles. Replacement tabs are also sold and delivered directly by the cleaning ladies to their current customers when necessary.

The business model is humanly centered around cleaning ladies, as users and re-sellers of the product, empowering themselves and increasing their monthly income.

Idea Title

CLINK

Company / Organization Name

SURBIO

Where are you / your team located?

Buenos Aires, Argentina

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

- By drastically reducing the dependency on plastic recipientes and sachets switching from a liquid product to a solid concentrated product. - By setting up a sales and distribution model that naturally encourages to reduce and reuse.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

Case 1, Rajata from Kerala and also reduces the dependency con plastic caps.

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

Latin America.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

We envision transforming cleaning ladies into a powerful sales force and partner who will benefit for their sales and also as users with a more convenient product. Young professionals, men in general and small offices with cleaning ladies will naturally become Clink customers for being space effective and having a superior sales/distribution model that offers a better and broader solution.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Research & Early Testing: You are exploring an idea, gathering inspiration and information needed to test it with real users.
  • Prototyping: You have conducted some small tests or experiments with prospective users and will continue developing idea through these tests.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

Our startup company´s goal is to reduce plastic waste which is completely aligned with the New Plastics Economy Accelerator Program. Among our pillars is to generate smart, practical and pragmatic solutions from the current state of things combining technology, design, materials, biology and the wisdom of nature. The program will allow us to test and fully develop our idea to generate a global impact solution, working and learning with long experienced professionals in a 360° way.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

Team idea of our startup company.

Tell us about your work experience

Our startup company is formed by an Engineer and a Textile-Fashion designer with long experience in important companies who decided to partnership to work for the planet, the people and the future.

Please describe your legal and organizational structure

Company.

Please describe, in detail, your business model and how you intend to test and iterate this model.

Iterations will be focused in developing a coaching, tool kits, and sales model that ensures to empower cleaning ladies as a successful sales and delivery team. Key partnerships and channels to get to cleaning ladies may require iteration too, although we have found great acceptance and enthusiasm in the interviews. Product development will be a challenge, although many products already come in similar formats, we want to extent the actual product offer and solve it from a botanic approach.

Please explain how your innovation will work within, potentially improve, and provide benefit to the plastics system.

Cardboard boxes made from recycled materials, they have the best developed downstream market in Argentina. Clink cardboard packaging to be made for reuse and economically encouraged to be returned for recycling. High quality PET boxes and bottles are made to have a long use life and be reused, PET has the second best developed downstream market in Argentina. Clink PET boxes and bottles will be economically encouraged to be returned for recycling. Delivery system eliminates single use packaging

Please describe, in depth, how your solution will reduce the overall environmental footprint of packaging.

Clink system reduces environmental footprint primarily from preventing the unnecessary transport of liquid from place to place. We estimate 95% of the weight in cleaning products is water. By reducing environmental impacts of transport by approximately that much, it will outweigh any slight increase to the total product footprint because of changes in materials. Additionally plastic sachets previously used were not recyclable and the new cardboard boxes are, and made from, recyclable materials.

Please outline how your design, material, and delivery choices will influence price, and how you intend to address the price increase that may result from this solution.

Recycled cardboard boxes as an alternative to single use sachets will compensate their cost increase by being reusable; also by offering a discount in customers next purchase when returned, cardboard downstream costs are shortened. High quality PET boxes and bottles are made to have a long use-life, that will outweigh any current plastic container used for cleaning products. Also loose replacement tabs are directly delivered by the cleaning ladies eliminating the need for single use packaging.

Please explain how your solution will impact user behavior, and what design considerations you've included to ensure easy and intuitive interactions with your Idea.

Friendly social eco design. Solid concentrated products are already being sold in the market. Using cleaning ladies as re sellers and distributors makes easier the experience for customers, no more time spent buying cleaning products. Product designed to last longer and occupy less space.

Please describe how you intend to use the prize funding, if selected as a Top Idea. Be specific.

40% Tabs product development. 25% Coaching, training and sales model development. 20% Packaging development. 15% Digital, social and sales tools development.

Good idea. Like coffee pods and Vc effervescent tablets. And more convenient and efficient due to the reduced weight of large volume of liquid and recycled packaging. This design is a friendly social eco design also meet customers’ needs and wants. In addition, it really needs high technological supporting and big promotion. Hope will see it sold in supermarket soon.
Thanks for your design.

Hi!

This is an awesome idea!! I would love to use your product for sure. Have you consider using the same method as biodegrable coffee pods?

Hi Victoria,

Thank you very much for your comment! :)
Biodegrable pods are a good idea, right now our priority is to try to reduce the use of all kinds of packaging, specially single use ones, that is why we are focusing in tabs products and reusable packaging, Maybe for some specific products tabs format may not be the best, for those cases we will consider biodegradable or compostable packaging solutions.
Best!

Hi Kate

Thank you very much, it is nice hearing from you again.

We are in the process of making interviews to the users, making adjustments of the User Experience Map from their feedback and narrowing our Business Model for the refinement phase, to specifically tackle product and social challenges around the use-cases and challenge goals.

Evelyn, our prototype advisor, is being really helpfull.

We hope to update our idea around this concepts as soon as possible to gain feedback from the Open-Ideo community.

Thank you once again, best regards!

Bruno & Magui

I really think this is a great idea.
I like the scalability of the product, you could organise a automatic refill service and complement with an app for fast ordering.
There is even the option for future complementary innovation in to personal cleaning products.

Perhaps you should consider how you will sell the 'cleaning with water' concept - some users might be hesitant to purchase thinking how good could the product be if over 90% of the ingredients are water.
One suggestion to overcome customers perceptions is to run an online marketing campaign/competition where users are required to use a #hashtag thereby promoting awareness to their peer groups.  You could engage popular local celebrity's to participate in the campaign further spreading the message and brand.

What can I say about your product - I want it!!! I was wondering how dry products are made into tabs - just pressing or bonding agent? Can be handled without gloves ( as it is concentrated chemicals )? How long will it take to dissolve in application to the energy drinks?

Hi Irina! Thank you very much for your comment! :) Tabs are made from powder raw materials using pressing tecnology. We are working on natural non toxic based solution that will not require gloves. It will take between 30 seconds -1 minute to disolve depending on water temperature (the higher the temperature the faster it dissolves)

Hi Magdalena!

It is great to see that you are making progress.

How would Rajata order these products online? Could SMS be an alternative option?

Hi Kate

Thank you very much. We think a multi-channel marketing and commercialization strategy would be the best way to move forward and contemplate all customers, that should include SMS, Online, Telephone, Retailers, Dispensing Machines in strategic locations and Resellers.
Additionally we consider the product gives a good opportunity to have a reselling model that empowers local women by providing flexible job opportunities and also to work with communities in developing educational and training programs.

Best :)

This is a terrific idea. I especially appreciate your thoughtful design to teach users how to use the product such as making the caps the same shape as the tabs and having a water fill line on the bottle. I'm excited to see this tested soon and would be curious to hear the feedback from users!

Hi Magdalena Trucco and Bruno!

Interested in learning more about this idea. Would the implementation of this idea require different consumer behavior or a shift in consumer mindset? How would you encourage consumers to choose these dehydrated tab sets over the market norm?

Looking forward to hearing more about this idea!

Spam

Team

Hi Lauren,

It would definitely require a shift in consumers behavior, but I can imagine a smooth and doable transition, we where born in the 80's and recall switching from solid cloth soap to powder cloth soap and then to liquid cloth soap, also from liquid detergents to solid tablets for the dish washing machine. We are confident that the product would present several advantages that will encourage consumers choice: 1) Price 2) Size and Weight 3) Practical as it would provide with one set many cleaning solutions 4) Sets are made to last long in your house and reduce buying frequency 5) Easy to use 6) Attractive design 7) Waste reduction

Our message to consumers should also include or be:

-Educative: about plastic waste and its impact

-Transparency: about ingredients and production process

-Customer Involvement: publish plastic waste savings so people can visualize the impact of the shared mission

-Inclusive: collaborate in the economic development and/or health and hygiene of people in situations of vulnerability

Thank you for your comments!

Hi Magdalena and Bruno,

Thank you for sharing this with us. It is great to have you both in the challenge.

I like how you have considered lots of different products for this solution e.g. shampoo, drinks etc. Which one would you focus on in light of the use cases - https://d3gxp3iknbs7bs.cloudfront.net/attachments/d7cfea9d-b5a2-4ce3-a8de-3e518a3c4b67.pdf ?

What is the next step in developing your idea?

What sort of business model would/could you create around this e.g. subscription etc?

Team

Hi Kate,
Tabs (shampoo, soap) can also be purchased individually in small paper wraps, low transport and packaging costs could made this item affordable, any house bottle could be used as refill container, this way Rajata from Kerala could buy the product she needs avoiding plastic impact.
Tabs system can be design in a trendy way (like a chocolate case) to attract medium class customers but also in a nice, austere format affordable for people with lower incomes.
Our next step is meeting with a local chemical industry and laboratory to work on the development of the tabs or similar alternatives that may arise.
We are thinking in a multichannel sales business model: online, retail and resellers.
Thanks for your comments!
