Wikicircle is an open platform that provides access to more uniform information for consumers, free market research and market exposure to producers, and a decline in the use of non-recycle consumer goods, benefiting the environment.

Consumer Use

Consumers can use WikiCIRCLE to find products that best match their daily habits, economic status and geographic location. WikiCIRCLE will also follow-up with consumers if they allow, to inquire as to whether or not a product was used.

Producer Use

Producers of consumer goods can enter in their product in WikiCIRCLE. They will have access to web traffic data, number of likes for a product and number of ultimate purchases as available. Competitors can see how many of their competitor’s products sold.

Consumer/Producer Contributions

Anyone can enter in a new product on WikiCIRCLE. It can be as simple as uploading a picture of the product from a mobile phone or using one’s finger to draw on the screen. Yet, for a product to have full publicity and to be included in market data, the product entry must meet certain minimum content guidelines.

A full uploaded product will have product specs, including materials used, geographic availability and intended uses. A complete entry will also have information on the source of the materials and information on what happens to the product after use.

Crowd Sourced Scientific Data

A Shibboleth of sorts will be used; based on primary materials, or class of product there will be a default question that someone must answer correctly in order to enter information on the sustainability merits of a product.

One of the prime motivators for WikiCIRCLE, is reducing redundancy and instead further pushing the envelope on sustainable development. Initially prompting for brand name, use and the use of hand drawings of the product will be means of comparing products. With time improving artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to compare images, hand drawings and product descriptions.

In order to make the platform easier to use on mobile devices around the world, there will be a heavy reliance on images and the minimum amount of text needed. The intention is that, similar to Wikipedia, WikiCIRCLE will be a platform that is translated into multiple languages.

Hosting of Platform

Similar to Wikipedia, it is intended that WikiCIRCLE is overseen and paid for by a foundation. Initially this service will be hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) to insure that access is available within China.

Idea Title

Company / Organization Name

boundaries + crossings

Where are you / your team located?

Tacoma, United States

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

WikiCIRCLE redesigns how we make choices as consumers and producers, reducing our dependence on small format plastic to solve our problems. Consumers are more easily able to learn about alternatives to small format plastics and producers are able to receive real time data about what small format plastic alternatives best meet the needs of consumers.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

Anne would be targeted as an early adopter because she is making decisions that affect multiple people, but in reality this idea has relevance for all of the user groups. All of the personas would like to have more sustainable consumer goods and it would be easier for them to find the products that best fit their lifestyle and geographic location.

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

In all likelihood, this project would start on the west coast of the United States.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

One of the first steps will be to get consumers using plastic alternatives to enter in information about the products they use, and to reach out to amateur and professional scientists, starting with universities, to provide information on sustainability. I see one of the biggest challenges is how best to scale up the features that are available in WikiCIRCLE, yet this can easily be overcome with the input from those familiar with software development.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Research & Early Testing: You are exploring an idea, gathering inspiration and information needed to test it with real users.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

Success is having a working prototype that is easy for both consumer and producer to use. The Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program would offer an invaluable opportunity to develop WikiCIRCLE with the input of those that are currently designing new consumer products. As our product develops, we then would also be able to provide feedback to our fellow cohorts.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

My idea came from reading the submissions to the OpenIDEO challenge, and seeing that people were suggesting products and services that are already exists. It seems that the problem or the challenge is not to create a new product, but rather to give existing products exposure.

Tell us about your work experience

I have spent most of my career in education in various forms, challenging those around me to ask questions that redefine the realm of the possible.

Please describe your legal and organizational structure

We started as a student organization while in college and are now an unregistered organization.
