The ‘Waste-Smart’ Network celebrates the circular economy by "making, disposing and taking” better, collectively.

It deconstructs the journey of plastics from products to people to create a better alignment with both business and user needs, while greatly reducing plastic waste.

It is a comprehensive Plastics Management and Advisory Service which integrates the supply chain, users and recyclers by combining an on-line application and an on-ground collection-cum-delivery mechanism.

The ‘Waste-Smart’ Network provides professional as well as personalised guidance. It allows individuals and communities to consult with a diverse group of plastics and related waste experts to reduce their plastic footprint, at the same time participate in managing unrecyclable plastics more effectively.

The network would aim for creation of economic capital through more job opportunities and optimising investment into plastic technologies; preservation of natural capital by reducing environmental impact of other industries which can utilise the unrecyclable waste; and generation of social capital by inspiring individual and collective participation in addressing the small-format waste challenges.

The ‘Waste-Smart’ Network would be built on three pillars to achieve the desirable impact

  1. SIMPLIFY by Reducing complexity
  2. ENGAGE by Generating involvement
  3. CONNECT by Encouraging interaction

Pillar 1: SIMPLIFY

  • The service would enable standardise plastic materials for small formats to reduce complexity for the Supply Chain and Recyclers
  • For Users, the service would make identification of plastic type and waste sorting between recyclable and unrecyclable plastics easier
  • The collection system would help extract a significant amount of small-format/ unrecyclable packaging out of Recycler input

Pillar 2: ENGAGE

  • The service would improve knowledge of plastics diversity and possibilities for various sectors of the Supply Chain and for Recyclers
  • For Users, the service would create consciousness for recyclability, encourage reducing small format usage and improve perceptible value of post-use packs

Pillar 3: CONNECT

  • By improving knowledge of the post-sale cycle and enabling modification of non-recyclable waste, the service will connect the Supply Chain with both Users and Recyclers
  • Users would be motivated to participate and be responsible with their plastics waste individually
  • The service would also create post-usage awareness and improve perceptible value of post-use packs for All stakeholders

Key Features

  • Information of all Plastic types and sub-types in circulation with positive and negative effects on environment and human health (for All)
  • User-friendly coding for ease of plastic type identification (for All)

Idea Title

SIMPLIFY | ENGAGE | CONNECT Reduce Complexity, Generate Involvement, Encourage Interaction

Company / Organization Name

Strategic Branding & Design Consulting (SBDC)

Website currently under development. My profile can be found at-

Where are you / your team located?

Pune, India

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

- Standardises the materials used for unrecyclable small formats - Shows possibilities for reducing small format usage - Tracks the lifecycle of small format packs to ensure they reach appropriate collection points - Links with other industries that can utilise the unrecyclable waste - Provides incentives at individual and community levels for active participation

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

The Network solves the following on-ground issues: Case 1- Collection network of local support for small-format/ non-recyclable packaging connecting with and involving users Case 2- Identification of plastic type (recyclable/non-cyclable), ease of segregation at users end and induction of conscientious behaviour towards littering Case 3- Creation of opportunities for extracting small-format/ non-recyclable packaging out of the recycle chain and making them useful to other industries

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

A global context as the idea aims to create a plastic-conscious network across all stakeholders. Immediate impact would be desirable for Urban, Tier-1 and 2 locations in South-east Asia where the challenges and negative outcomes are more pervasive.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

The ‘Waste-Smart’ Network would be available on any device with Internet connectivity and promoted with a compelling ’B-Waste-Smart’ campaign reaching users at touch-points before, during and after pack usage. The network would advise the supply chain and train local collection agencies with the 'How to B-Waste-Smart' series. Challenge- Creating a Game-changer Experience beyond the Network's platforms to inspire users, for which every aspect of the experience would need to tested and fine-tuned

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Research & Early Testing: You are exploring an idea, gathering inspiration and information needed to test it with real users.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

NPEAP would help gain access to key stakeholders and existing networks involved in creation of the Plastics Circular Economy whose contributions would be vital for development of a Pilot along with opportunities for exchange between the two platforms involved Goals - Curate plastics database and Design user experience for On-line Application - Detail elements of On-ground Collection-cum-Delivery Mechanism - Conduct Pilot at 10-15 locations in SE Asia, to lay the foundation for scale-up

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

“Is Plastic really necessary?” and “Can I make it more useful?” are questions I have often asked as a user. While browsing additional resources provided by OpenIdeo, I came across a statement in the supply chain video- “There is no such thing as waste. Just unusual results”. This statement inspired me to find the gaps in the Circular Economy of small-format plastic packaging which have caused the ‘unusual results’ and possible mechanisms to deliver value by reducing or eliminating such outcomes.
