The solution for an alternative for plastics can be found in the ocean: the very place we are toxicating right now

Instead of making packaging from plastics, it could be made of seaweed. This sea product is inexpensive, can be grown by humans, grows fast.

What needs to be investigated is: how to add colours for example. Get rid of the green, make it white or another colour (for eastetic reasons). Besides that, the thickness of this new form of packaging material needs to be Investigated, so heavy products or food can be packaged also.

Maybe it is to be redesigned, add another natural product, so it hardens. Note: seaweed is now investigated to replace human tissue. With succes: scientists remove the green parts, so only the tissue remains. Its implanted in human and takes over the human tissue system. Maybe there's an effective collaboration possible.

Anyway: if this kind of package is dumped into the water, rivers, or oceans, no harm done! The ' package ' is then where it belongs!

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

It can be moulded for example. Or maybe we can first make powder from the seaweed and form it into any desirable form. Like spirulina and spirulina pills. This needs testing, though.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

Sea, ocean and pollution.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

I do not see any obstacles. If it is presented as a good alternative for plastic, humanity will be very happy to have a good replacement for it, a natural one. Plus, if education and marketing shows the amount of plastic we get into our bodies and the consequences of it, the need for a good alternative will be large.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Research & Early Testing: You are exploring an idea, gathering inspiration and information needed to test it with real users.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

My personal goal is to stop the production of plastic worldwide. To test my idea, scientists are needed because I do not have the knowledge nor possibilities to test my own idea. What needs to be tested is shaping seaweed or seaweedpowder, like pills, and get rid of the green colour or add another colour.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

My idea emerged in my own head, just 5 minutes ago.

Tell us about your work experience

Yeah, I am a teacher in design, ICT, communication, marketing at a university of applied sciences. I am very interested in science and how we can make a circular economy creatively and green.

Please describe your legal and organizational structure

Theres just me.

Hello there,
Have you come across options for a binding agent for the spirulina powder? Do you reckon it could be moulded with heat alone too?
