Water bottles are over a two-hundred billion dollar industry and a small percentage of those petroleum-based water bottles are being recycled.  The labeling, cap, and tamper-evident band of these bottles are most likely not recycled at all.  This causes additional unwanted waste in landfills, waterways, and hundreds of other places on Earth that damage the environment. The Great Plastic Flip (c) is an initiative to spread awareness and further distribute our 100% compostable bottle, cap, and label in ways that add value to the collected waste material.

Where are you / your team located?

Corporate Headquarters in Red Oak, IA and Leominster, MA

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

By making bottles, caps and labels from compostable resin, we eliminate caps and labels that end up doing damage in the environment.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

Trevor & Benjamin Young Parents in Minneapolis, MN USA "With tear-off labels and a bottle cap or two...pile of waste we can't recycle at the end of the day because they are too thin to be of any value."   Specifically, we will impact “closed-loop” sites like elementary-secondary schools, sports stadiums, corporate headquarters, entertainment complexes, airports, and university campuses where bottled water can be distributed, contents (water) consumed, and collected for industrial composting.

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

Global/ world-wide

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

Education and awareness is a key component to move our initiative forward with the use of project funding to implement marketing tactics and program implementation support. Reaching out via social media to generate interest by “closed-loop” facilities of the availability of our product. Additionally, the Industrial Composters who already pick up food waste from those facilities will assist in passing along information about our new “one-of-a-kind” product.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Piloting: You have started to implement your solution as a whole with a first set of real users. You may have started to develop a business model for your idea, including identifying key customer segments, relevant partnerships, go-to-market strategy, and draft financials.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

To reach chosen marketplace, millions of advertising dollars are needed. We are the ONLY 100% compostable water bottle, cap, and label available. We intend to identify high profile demonstration sites to "prove the concept" and share the ongoing program results. We will help the venues to further position themselves as the sustainable leader in their industry and marketplace. After bottle adoption, it is our desire to see the initiative lead to further advances in compostable materials.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

Iowa State University professors did the original research in converting corn products into Poly Lactic Acid for Dow Chemical Corp. The unsung heroes of bioplastics development. Dow partnered with Cargill Corporation and formed Cargill-Dow Corporation which became NatureWorks. Naturally Iowa, an organic dairy processing plant, was founded and NatureWorks assisted our developing the world's first compostable milk bottle in 2004 convincing us, that plant-resin is a key to the "plastics problem".

Great idea! Maybe I should rethink my daily plastic water bottle? I hope this compostable bottle is generally available FAST!
