All those small bits of plastic after we unwrap a bar of soap or all of those shampoo and shower gel bottles and sometimes even the plastic around the lids would all go away if we would all use soap bars or shampoo bars wrapped in re-usable wax wraps.

We want to initially support local producers of soap and help them to develop shampoo bars and package them with our wax wraps instead of plastic packaging.

Ultimately we would like to convince larger producers to do the same. IN order to do this we would need to reduce our cost price by having more capital to buy larger quantities of raw materials.

We already use the Wax Wraps to wrap soap in for travelling and it seals and makes it water tight enough to throw into your backpack and keep going..

I think our product could be altered in a way so that it could be used as packaging for commercial use.

We have more plastic free ideas, but need funding.

Idea Title

Soap and shampoo re-usable wax wrap packaging - packaging you can re-use again and again from www.

Company / Organization Name

Bee Conscious Co Ltd

Website our company is called BeeConscious Co Ltd

Where are you / your team located?

Northern Thailand about one hour from Chiang Mai, in a rural village in the mountains.

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

All those small bits of plastic after we unwrap a bar of soap or all of those shampoo and shower gel bottles and sometimes even the plastic around the lids would all go away if we would all use soap bars or shampoo bars wrapped in re-usable wax wraps. Please see our instagram account that displays many ways to use our wax wraps as an alternative to packaging.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

Case one. Repackaging with SuperBee Wax Wraps reduces waste and provides the consumer with a re-usable alternative that they can re-use in the home or on the go.

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

Locally and then to spread globally by setting up other facilities and recreating our social business practices in rural areas or of unemployment.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

Our production is based on providing more and more jobs. The work is easily trained to new people and the machinery can be increased as staff do. All of our products are handmade and have the opportunity to provide more and more jobs. We have an online shop that will sell our products worldwide. Ideally we want to set up new facilities in areas of low employment or poverty.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Piloting: You have started to implement your solution as a whole with a first set of real users. You may have started to develop a business model for your idea, including identifying key customer segments, relevant partnerships, go-to-market strategy, and draft financials.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

We need capital to purchase raw materials in larger quantities to lower our cost price so that the product will be affordable to sell as packaging for other products. To scale up, we would also need to buy some more equipment too. We need more connections to the right people-networking. Money for attending the right Trade Fairs would be so wonderful!!!!

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

After I developed our wax wraps, I was showing them to a friend who travels a lot and he suggested it would be great for him to wrap his bar of soap in them. Since then I have used it to wrap my soap and shampoo bars and it really works for as well as now many customers.

Tell us about your work experience

I have worked many jobs; farmer, baker, teacher, Japanese Interpreter, Duty manager at a Youth Hostel etc I have tried a few different business ideas in the past, always had ideas, but SuperBee works!

Please describe your legal and organizational structure

We have a registered social enterprise in Thailand called BeeConscious Co ltd

HI Kate,
Our production has already been created in a way that is easily scalable. I have a waiting list of hardworking locals in need of work and the production line, I can replicate easily, at a cost of course and can maintain our high level of quality.
I have been looking for local producers of soap and shampoo and have found some. The most difficult part is to create a wax wrap reusable packaging for producers that is affordable for them and the consumer to buy the end product with the re-usable product. In order for us to lower our unit price we would need more capital to order, in particular the fabric at a bulk rate of minimum 1000 yards per fabric. We couldn't feasibly buy it up front with out having orders first. Apart from capital, it would be great to have also connections to larger producers with in this market, for example LUSH, who have been creating some awesome package free campaigns by photographing staff naked and posting to social media. We are already ready to catch some big fish so that they can lead the others towards plastic free and re-usable packaging. We need a well know brand to set an example? IN general sitting here in Thailand we are searching everyday for kitchenware shops and supermarkets that will resell our SuperBee Wax Wrap products for us. Despite our video now having over 4 million views We still need to get SuperBee into stores. The quality of our product and it's packaging is really good and and it sells very well in all the retail stores it is currently in. I would love to be able to afford to go to trade shows and some help with distribution would be really marvelous.
We can expand our wrapping for commercial use to delis as well for cold cut meats and for wrapping cheese. I have a friend who makes her own cheese who is wrapping them with our product, it looks amazing and keeps the cheese fresher longer due to the elements of the natural coating. Perhaps I should not have limited my idea to just bathroom supplies but for many different products, including perishables.

Hi Anny

It is great to see another idea from you in the challenge.

Have you identified a local supplier of shampoo bars?

Can you explain a bit more about how this idea can be implemented at scale? What would need to happen for this design to be brought to market at the local scale and then the global scale? What would it take for this idea to integrate at the scale of implementation you are aiming for?
