Partnership between shops to collect and reuse food packages

A network of shops which could use and reuse a standardised food packaging. That way, when a person gets takeaway food, s/he can return it to the nearest shop who is part of the network, and the package gets cleaned and reused. It makes consumers' lives easier as it does not require people to return it to a specific location.

A system of stickers in the shop entrance will make recognition of participant shops easy for customers. A system of redistribution of excedent packages from each shop will also be in place to ensure good logistics.

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

It basically dramatically reduces its use by the utilisation of standardised durable plastics instead.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

It makes more sense in larger cities with a wider network of shops who can collaborate. In addition, because of the lifestyle of big cities, where people tend to use more takeaway services.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

It would have to start with a reasonably large network of shops to work - maybe starting with restaurant chains makes more sense. One of the main challenges would be to agree on a standardise packaging which would make sense for different restaurants. Also, hygiene of the package can be difficult in some locations, due to specific requirements.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Research & Early Testing: You are exploring an idea, gathering inspiration and information needed to test it with real users.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

My overall goal is to start a partnership between restaurants in order to facilitate the development of various measures to reduce waste. I understand that this is important to create actions which are convenient for customers, who find themselves usually having to go a long way to do the 'right thing', although being environmentally conscious. The use of standardise reusable packaging would be the first step in this regard.
