Refillable Shampoo Sachets

Capped Sachet which can be refilled at dispensing machines installed at retail shops.

1. There will be dispensing machines with multiple outlets corresponding to different brand of  shampoos. These dispensing machines will be placed at the retail shops which currently sells sachets.

2. User will go to the retail shop to buy shampoo.

3. The retailer will give user the refillable shampoo sachet. The cost of the sachet will be kept relatively high to promote reusing the sachet.

4. User inserts the coin into the machine, opens the cap and fills the sachet with the dispensing machine.

5. User takes the filled sachet home.

6. Users opens the cap of sachet while taking a bath.

7. When user needs shampoo again, user will go to dispensing machine and refill it.

8. When the sachet is damaged due to long use, the user can buy another one.

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

The sachet is refillable so the users do not need to buy more sachets. They can just go to the retail shop to refill the existing sachet. If the packaging is damaged due to prolonged usage, they can send it for recycling.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

This applies to all the personas in case 1.

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

The solution can be implemented in all the developing countries. This can even work in the rural areas where the most of the sachets are consumed.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

We can collaborate with the existing brands into the unified ecosystem. We can try to engage more retailers into ecosystem to make it more reachable. We can also try to educate users about benefits of using reusable packaging.

In process of becoming top idea, the feedback gathered will further help us improve the products. The funds will help us do a pilot study test the solution and check its feasibility. This will also help convince bigger FMCG brands to implement this idea make this world a better place together.

We are design students at IIITDM Jabalpur, India. We have interest in Human Centered Design and worked on variety of projects involving Waste Management Systems.

This is a great idea! I also contributed an idea to replace shampoo sachets.

I was wondering how the cost of these will compare to that of what is currently being used? If retailers will need to purchase a dispensing machine, I imagine that this would be a large fixed cost to them that would need to be offset by increasing the price of refills.
