How can we design a new straw that can be recycled / or even better / repurposed and reused for something else so that we don’t discard it and it doesn't’t become waste in the first place.

Idea / Solution:

the solution comprises of 3 components.. a product, a brand name, and a campaign:

Make straws out of silicon instead of plastic. Silicon is recyclable. Also, re-design the straw so that it is straight with no curves and has a firm form. This way, after it is used, it can serve as a handle for a pen.. Or a handle for a paint brush.. The straw is repurposed into a writing or drawing tool. Refer to attached image for an illustration of the idea.

 Re/Straw: Use and Reuse

Campaign (BYOS):

Plastic straws used today are super cheap, that’s why businesses provide them for free and customers expect it to be that way. But the whole business model needs to be re-imagined if we are to use straws in a more responsible fashion. This requires that a campaign is designed to draw people’s attention to the situation with plastic straws and how much they are impacting our environment. This needs to be done to pave the way for either businesses to offer more environmentally-friendly straws (e.g. silicon straw) for an extra charge, or for customers to bring their own straws: Bring Your Own Straw (BYOS)

Idea Title

Re-Straw use & reuse / straw & restraw

Company / Organization Name

Where are you / your team located?

Dubai, UAE

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

the straw is designed using silicon, a recyclable material. But better yet, the straw is designed to be reused as a writing or drawing tool. This helps in preventing straws from being discarded and turned into waste in the first place... When there are too many straws/pens around, we can send excess across the globe to communities that need them.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

Use Case 3: Straws and takeaway coffee lids

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

Straws can be design across the globe by manufacturing plants that work on silicon products

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Research & Early Testing: You are exploring an idea, gathering inspiration and information needed to test it with real users.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

The idea is at research stage still, it requires support for us to design a prototype by working with an existing factory to design first version of the product and test it with users. Being part of the new plastics economy accelerator program would help in this regard.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

This is an individual idea I came up with. I personally draw and illustrate in my spare time and was reimagining drawing and doodling tools when this idea came up.

Tell us about your work experience

i work in a mix of many different things. I am currently a technology business consultant where i design strategies for clients around IT transformation. I am also an illustrator in my spare time.

Please describe your legal and organizational structure

Great thinking, I just use borosilicate glass straws. Infinitely reuseable, chemically inert and stylish, i cover them with silicone tips to protect teeth/glasses.
