Lidless-Cup (LC): The container that brings an edge to drinking coffee...or any other hot beverage.

I designed a one use coffee container that uses a system of folding flaps in place of a lid, to reduce on plastic waste.

The Lidless-Cup is a three sided one use coffee container that uses flaps in place of a plastic lid.  Instead of a cylinder the LC is a three sided rigid structure.  at the top opening of the container are three trapezoidal shaped flaps that are able to fold in on themselves.  Once the proper folding is done the liquid inside is safely secured.  LC was inspired by simple cardboard boxes and their folding lids.

Where are you / your team located?

Providence, Rhode Island USA.

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

This product reduces plastic waste by eliminating the plastic lid cover. The LC uses a folding lid system that is already a part of the paper cup. In future designs the cup will be made out of materials that can either be composted or recycled, unlike the existing plastic or wax coated single user paper cups.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

LC applies to Case 3.

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

My studio is located in Providence, RI. All the research, prototyping and testing are done locally. However, this product is designed to be implemented in any business that sells coffee.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

I envision this product being introduced to local coffee shops first to see if they could sensibly work in a high pace situation. The folding system has to be taught, so the initial obstacle would be to test with baristas and get feedback as to whether this is a viable idea, and tweak the system as needed. If all goes well, then next is material and manufacturing criteria to make it more sustainable and affordable to produce.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Prototyping: You have conducted some small tests or experiments with prospective users and will continue developing idea through these tests.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

My goal is to eliminate plastics in One Use coffee containers. The first goal is to create a final working model through testing of recyclable/compostable materials. The Accelerator Program will allow me to progress with working prototypes and work with professionals to create a working system that can introduce LC to the masses.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

In 2008, during one of my product design classes, each student was given the assignment to design a new type of packaging that would reduce on plastic waste. I first thought of coffee cups because I knew the lids were non recyclable.

Tell us about your work experience

I studied industrial and architectural design at MICA. Since then I've worked for a few design firms and also am working to develop a bamboo prosthetic system for developing countries.

Please describe your legal and organizational structure
