Koepala Aterimo™ is a patented all-in-one takeaway packaging format suitable for any type of takeaway food or beverage for carrying and serving the product in the same packaging. The packaging is transformable into a rigid bowl or a can for eating or drinking. This innovation is not limited to any particular material selection. Biodegradable plastics, non-plastic fiber materials as well as reusable alternatives can be applied. The packaging is manufactured on a roll, can be transported flat for the foodservice and folded flat after eating for easy disposal.

Koepala Aterimo™ cuts packaging waste more than 50% and reduces the space needed for transportation up to 10-fold making food-to-go business simple, innovative and efficient. The packaging is designed flat to save space and money. For your consumers the packaging provides a meal experience like no other. Good to go.

Company / Organization Name

Where are you / your team located?

Helsinki, Finland / Maastricht, The Netherlands.

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

Koepala Aterimo™ can be sealed spill proof to remove the need of additional lids, caps and sleeves for transporting a meal or a drink. The solution is transformable into a rigid container for eating even without tear-offs and can be divided into separate compartments to include condiments/cutlery to replace small sachets. This all minimizes the use of boxes, lids and plastic/paper bags for takeaway food and reduces weight and space needed in logistics without compromising easy eating experience.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

Koepala Aterimo™ applies best to the Case 2 on the situations like Trevor & Benjamin enjoying their meals/snacks on to go. The innovative opening mechanism removes the need of seal film lids, caps, sleeves and also the tear-off strips on our earlier prototype and meals can be carried/delivered easily even in a bag spill-proof. Carrier bags, cup holders and rigid boxes are no longer needed. "The tear-off food seal" concept is turned around into a flexible packaging disposable flat in one piece.

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

The idea applies globally to all the use cases in the cities and urban areas.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

We can use current industrial packaging machinery and material technology for mass production. We are also validating industrial partners and planning a industrial scale up pilot for the identified launching customers in travel catering and meal delivery. For scaling up we need the right partners and to establish indicators for measuring impact in the process. To support our development we need advice in int. business dev., manufacturing, circular economy and to develop leadership skill.

At what stage of development is your Idea?

  • Prototyping: You have conducted some small tests or experiments with prospective users and will continue developing idea through these tests.
  • Piloting: You have started to implement your solution as a whole with a first set of real users. You may have started to develop a business model for your idea, including identifying key customer segments, relevant partnerships, go-to-market strategy, and draft financials.

Please describe how becoming a Top Idea and working with the Think Beyond Plastics Accelerator Program will help to accelerate your solution.

Participating in the Program would enable us to speed up our plans to evaluate and fine-tune the most sustainable product features and operational practices to launch the solution for the takeaway food services. A successful program would provide us with an opportunity for international pilot project with selected partners & customers, a validated circular business model, structured development process for our product and complete team + advisors for international growth…and funding for this.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

The idea emerged while Janne was working hands-on as a Co-Founder on an event catering company. It was a lucky coincidence of combining a takeaway packaging idea with a foldable sled concept that he was developing on his spare time for the winter expeditions.

A very nice simple transforming construction that with some tests, stories trials and tweaks, would make a good and practical user experience. Perhaps with thicker and stiffer wall or flaps it could become a fold-up multi-use lunchbox that is so clever people want to reuse it. Add a deposit and return system and you achieve a no waste system the also supports the conversion to bioplastics. A folding container to transport, display, eat from and take with in your bag or pack when your done. Great simple design.

It looks like your construction would work very with biodegradable and bio-source plastics like from contributor Full Cycle, polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA). Have a look at our CUP platform to see if the service concept would help you scale by community collaboration. I am looking forward to seeing what you do next!

Thank you for your comments Keith Riggs!

This challenge surely inspired us to look more into the reusable product and business models. I would love to find out if we could find some support for tweaking and trialing our solution from your network.

At the moment we are gathering a group of collaborating companies for our pilot project to be started by the end of this year. I will have a look at CUP platform.
