An effort to reduce the plastic waste by re-imagining the design and manufacturing process.

Shampoo sachets have more or less looked the same since they were first made. This is an attempt to redesign these sachets and create a different dispensing solution for shampoos and conditioners and make it easy and efficient. The sachets are manufactured by blow moulding process which makes them durable. The entire process of tearing or cutting has been eliminated and these sachets can be easily recycled due to their materials and the way they are made.

A basic idea of using natural hair cleansing products as the outer form for these sachets helped to develop their structure and packaging. They look appealing. Their usage helps to utilise maximum contents without any wastage. Due to their varied form and structure these sachets cannot enter the drain or any tiny places where they could lead to clogging. Thus they can be collected together and sent for recycling.

How does this Idea redesign unrecyclable small format plastic items that often end up as waste?

The existing small format plastics (sachets) are flat and can be easily torn into smaller pieces which in turn creates a large amount of waste and these small plastics cannot be easily collected. Most of them are lost or unseen , while a majority form a large chunk of waste found in drains and pipes, causing clogging and pollution.The idea I proposed for the sachets gives them a different structure which is difficult to pass through drains and pipes.It makes the user dispose them properly.

Which use cases does your Idea apply to?

The user persona would be anyone who uses shampoo sachets, either at home or while travelling. Its a great difficulty to open these sachets, they are mostly torn and then left in the washroom where the water drains them off into the drains. Sometimes People also forget to pick it up and purposely chuck them into the pipes . This has been a very big negligence towards the plastic waste generation .My personal experience has also led me to this conclusion.

In what geographical context or area does your Idea plan to operate / solve?

The process of disposal should begin from homes or from where the product has been used. My main target area is our water bodies. Plastic has miserable affected marine life and my aim os to reduce the waste in these natural ecosystems.

How do you envision scaling up your Idea?

It would be a completely new product and hence convincing the consumers would not be a difficult task. The whole experience of using this product will make it different from the rest. Also the idea is very innovative for it to succeed. Although there would be issues like price of the sachet due to its manufacturing processes. Carrying them in bulk may occupy a larger space making transportation a little inconvenient.

This is a great experience for me as sharing an idea worldwide and developing it for the people is surely a great feather in my cap. Design is something that is done by the people , for the people and I have always worked towards this. With this program, I would be able to make this idea into a product and help the people as well as make an effort towards the sustainable use of plastic. saving the environment even in the tiniest way could make a large impact.

Please describe from where your Idea emerged

These ideas were developed with two of my colleagues, Neetica Pande and Jui Apte, when we were trying to brainstorm for a local competition in our city. The theme of this competition was to create innovative dispensing solutions for any consumer product. We thought of working with shampoos and conditioners as they are a very important need for every human being. Hair care has always been a major concern for every woman and most of the men.

Tell us about your work experience

I am a Product Design student in the 5th year at MITID. I have interned in the fields of packaging and structure design already.I also studied packaging design at the Strate College of Design(Paris)

Please describe your legal and organizational structure

MIT Institute of Design is a college under the MIT-ADT University in Pune.It was founded twelve years ago and currently comprises of 1200 students.

It would be globally used by any person who travels for a long period. All age groups can use this product.

Since the idea is just at the stage of a proposed concept, I would like it to be prototyped if possible and test it as well.
